oh, to answer one of the questions, the tank was modeled in 1 day and textured in 2-3 days
the helicopter was modeled in 3 days , textured in 2 days.

i took the 10 month 3d animation and digital effects program. Great program if your willing to put in the time and effort. I think it's among the top 4-5 in North America....

Hi failsafe..

Why did you delete the copyright marks on the lower right of these pictures by the way?

If YOU made these models yourself you are indeed verrry good. In fact you should be a professoinal if you can model like that.
DON't get me wrong, but I almost doubt that.

If you modeled them:
what program do you use and in what time do you complete one of those in the average?
On what machine do you do the modeling and rendering?

These are great images! The models, textures, and lighting are all top-notch!

I would be interested to know more about the process you go thru when creating these images

1. Which program did you use for modeling? Are you using polygons or curved surfaces?
2. Which program did you use for rendering? What is the average rendering time?
3. The models seem to have great deal of details. What are you using as reference? Where do you get the measurements specs for these objects?
4. Are any of these models available commercially?

There many questions that I would love to get answers for, but the above will suffice

One more thing
You mentioned that you have worked on a direct to video cg, Can you more specific about the direct to video title/s that you have worked on? I would be interest in seeing that. (If it is commercially available)

In any case, these images are quite impressive!

yes I did both of these, and all the ones I linked to at my site. the reason that other stuff is blurred is cause It had my name and an old e-mail address that I don't use any more. These were done awhile back when I attended Vancouver Film School. they were modeled in Softimage with textures done in Photoshop. It's good of you to question the authenticity with all the stuff that's been happening in this forum lately, I'll take it as a compliment.

As to the "you should be a professional if you model like that" I am .. I got a job right out of school and have worked on direct to video cg, television series work, and have recently moved to the gaming industry.

Asking about modeling technique would be more adequate if you doubt that he's the author.

The pilot has a great helmet.

thanks for the replies so far guys, to answer a few questions.

1: All modeling was done in softimage. Almost all objects are b-spline patches, although the tank has a few polygons

2: all textures were painted in Photoshop, and the models were rendered out in Mental Ray. Rendering time had to be kept low because of time restrictions for your reel, it's nice if you can make things look good but if they take 30min a frame it'll never get done. So most of my objects hover around 60,000 triangles pretty low number for these kind's of models. So in the end rendering time was anywhere from 1-4 min per frame

3: a lot of it was just guess and test. I found small crappy profile pics of some of the aircraft in Janes aircraft recognition handbook. It usually gives a top, side, and front view, which is good for reference. I also did a lot of hunting on the net. I'm really into military aircraft and stuff so had quite a few things commited to memory and a lot of books lying around.

4: right now I don't even have them on my hard drive, there on an old jazz drive somewhere. I've thought about seeing if viewpoint would want them but have been to busy at work.

The direct-to-video stuff that I worked on isn't out yet, it's a casper movie that's due out this christmas, but it's looking very sweet, have to wait till then, sorry. The tv show I worked on and helped develope is called Action Man, and should be out in Canada this May

later______________

question for the artists here. How many of you work in 3D? I don't see that much 3d work shown here *granted it's mostly a digital painting forum* but I'm curious all the same. hmmmm maybe this should be a new topic rather than a reply .....

Awesome models failsafe! I've seen your work before on other sites. I'm going to school for 3d this year for 3d modeling. I was wondering IF someone could pull of your type of detail and accuracy with their models for their demo reel, how hard is it after that to get into the industry? Tough question ,just wondering about what companies are looking for now.

to answer your question once again, failsafe.. I only do 3D work now. I'm currently working with Rockwell Automation on an international film. However I can't display it myself until everything's set in stone. My site is at http://www.synj.net
