This goes for all us artist....all you painters, modelers, designers, and alt artist of all shapes!

I was wondering if we are all just a bunch of blessed and talented geeks (note: that that's not a bad thing)! I'm not talking about you snarting cliche nerd boy....but rather a solitaire person submerged in their own crazy worlds. Us artist have always seem to stick together...and most people outside of artistic talents can't even comprehend the meanings of most of our creations. What does this all mean! Nobody knows....but we are all born with talent! I don't believe a person can learn to draw...I do believe that a person can shape his/her talents and expand their ways of seeing. So with that said....have you ever thought about how we have this connection this bond? I mean a artist can meet another and most likely they will talk art or have interest in another's art. Why? Ofcourse we can't answer these questions but it's a thought!

What's a geek? A person that is so into what they're interest are, that if given a chance they'd sit and do it all day, everyday of their lives! Does this sound like most of us?

I may just be crazy....so I'll wait for some kind of response before I go on.....

Im a geek. I do not only talk to my cat, but actually listen to her as well, understand and reply. Furthermore i used to drink about 4,5 liters of coffee a day until it fucked up my skin so bad i had to stop or look like freddy krueger. I also like, and im pretty much the only one im sure, to wear my father's formless and sloppy "im a weirdass teacher" clothes (not that i dont buy my own ones... geez) and i listen to grindcore.

Not to mention i do the geekishest of the geekish - i play counter-strike.

Being a geek is something that I am proud of. I have tried everything from a-z in the geek department (except perhaps wearing too geekish clothes and glasses
I have Roleplayed, played card games, computer games since 4 years old(then it was really geeky) I read comics and watch Anime and splatter movie. I draw superheroes and villains and aliens and the things I think of. I read sci-fi and fantasy novels, never touching what might be real. I drink Coke and I Eat Pizza. Those food substances are like a religion to me. I watch Hong Kong Action and Kung Fu movies and I practice Kung-Fu too. I also listen to music that some people wouldn't touch. When I look at a Computer Code I see a beauty that is unparalleled except for the art of another person.

What makes this all so damn interesting is that I have always something to occupy myself with. I don't get drunk every weekend and party until I get so wasted and sorry for how I spent my life that I kill myself.
I know that every day brings something new, because I ain't afraid of trying something new, no matter how geekish.

Being a geek is being yourself, not putting on a mask and act like other people want you too. We don't go with the average flow. We go with our own flow.

Wow, that is long. Hope it helps.

Yeah I'm proud too! It's not so much as to label ourselves "geeks"....but rather how we seem to lurk amongst each other! I don't have anything against people in general but I'd talk to a person of my same interest before I'd give the ordinary a nod of the head. Yeh you could it's the cliche....we have something in commone senario....but it seems to go deep than that! For instance look at the atmosphere and cooperation of the people on this board.....and compare that to others. I've only been posting recently but I've been around awhile (lurking).

What is it that makes us artist band together? You have other groups with so much in common.....let's directors! Movie directors are artist in a certain sense...imo it is art! Look how they support each other and share thoughts....now look at other groups...and how they controverse into rivalry! Sure some of us compete but we pat eachother on the back!

What this has to do with the topic? I waste my life away drawing, painting, and sitting on the internet! I read everthing that doesn't consist of mainstream gossip, watch anime to horror and play games every chance I get! I create my own dressing style....the exact opposite of whats "in style" or "on trend"! I find something to learn every hour! I write poetry and ficton story's.....not to mention I'm only atracted to dark, sci-fi, and fatasy fiction...games, movies etc. All may friends are either artist, hippies, goths or just plain out cool in a dweb sense! heheehehe! Talk to my dog Drink tons of coke and tea! And I always seem to be anti-existant when it comes to mainstream activities! I go into trances around noon and around midnight and just sit and look at the wall...making patterns out of the bumps for about an hour! I go to work and stay overtime just to complete more art....then go home a draw...until I feel like playing a game or watch a movie or....my favorite gropping my beautiful fiance!

Well call us subculture, anti-socital, geeks, are just artist.....I'm just glad to say that I was born a fuzzy apple rather than just a apple! I love myself....and I'm glad to see we are all proud of ourselves!

I don't think of myself as a geek I have even been labled as a prep aka rich snotty person (which I'm neither just well liked). We really do stay a lot to ourselves, but the greatest thing I have ever done was take my Commercail art class I'm taken now. There's about 15 of us. Some preps, a few goths, some gang bangers, a few nerds, and then some like me can fit into just about any crowd. We're all different, but once we get started we are so the same. Everyone should try being locked in a room with 15 other strangers that are artist. It's so odd. So in other words we're not geek. We're a total different class. We are artist! And I'm damn proud to be one.

Right... Time for me to rant a bit...

STANDBY

I'm a bit peeved at the word "Geek" to tell you the truth. Anti-Social? What do you call this forum? We're interacting in a way that "popular(read - Braindead) people" can never do. I distance myself from these people... they are serious bad news...

Noticed how many "cool" people see themselves as "rebels"... even though they all dress, act and talk in exactly the same way. We're the rebels, the ones who dared to dream. I'm proud to be a geek becuase geeks are special, a little bit extra, who live lives full of interest. Sod anyone who thinks we're boring. There's got to be people like us or alot of things that people do (and need) wouln't be possible. TV, Cinema, The Internet, MP3 music, CDs, DVDs, Alcohol, Medicine, Cars (Internal Combustion Engine), Electricity, Lights, Clean water, Speakers,Pencil sharpeners... all things "made" by people who were "geeks"... Without us "geeks" the world would truly be a boring place to live in.

Ok... that didn't all make sense... but I don't care.

Breaking News : Half-Life Alien Govenment Officials vote 98-2 that Gordon Freeman is a danger to society.

Shub-Niggarth spotted at "Big, Ugly, Hell Mother" Convention... sighting of local Physics teacher proved a hoax.

I've just about totally severed my social life to gain momentum on my learning process with the arts, and to further focus on myself. Or maybe its just a reaction to how quickly life has changed after losing someone I've loved intensily and spent most of my time with. I've always been an extremely antisocial person, with the exception of the internet.

However, in doing this I realize that I've hindered my own inspirations taken from life outside my box. My original aim at producing artwork was to create something with a lot of reflection into what I conceive as reality. I've altered my reality, I rarely see whats outside my house. How am I suppose to produce art with that kind of inspiration if I've cut myself off to it.

Point is, dont try to make your artwork drive you, let life drive your artwork. Sitting in front of your computer all damned day may be a life, but its a fairly limited one to experiences.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get my license, go rock climbing, jump out of an airplane, spontaniously ask some chick to marry me, play russian roulette, tip a cow, eat moldy cheese, join the secret service, thrill kill, steal a famous piece of art, smoke pot, drink till my liver explodes, get a pet goat, swim the atlantic, learn to fly, become president, get a divorce, meet Gillian Anderson, steal John Carmacks Ferrari, and go to the moon.

I'll paint it all later.

Well said Aquamire! I try all kinds of stuff just for the experience.....but I always end up learning something that makes me even more of a geek! And I love it....as said we make the world go round....with the help of the God of men ofcourse.

I think they way to put us is best put from a X-Files's line... I know that the show was not about anything close to it, but it fits. I'm not her, she'snot me, but we are all together... or something like that... Oh well it sounds good.

And dEATH.Tool you are right. We share our ideas and help out to help the next man do his/her best. We don't hide in the shadows clinching our art saying mine you can't see, copy, or borrow. When someone finds something cool, new, or a better way of doing something they post it. I have learned more here in the few months I've come here then in all the years I've taken classes... and trust me I leave everyone in the dust here (that could mean I'm really good, or this place sux!)

definition of a geek = ?

i love the computer + art because of the possibilities, my entire future and job will be based on it, but i still have a social life.....its not like im a hermit who fears sunlight and wont dare to communicate with anyone. i love doing things outside/with friends, but when im not doing that, im on the computer.

in my opinion, a geek is someone who still laughs+snorts at things immaturely like when they hear the word "breast", and kids who shelter themselves from the world and blockade everyone from entering a social situation with them.....these are the deprived kids who i pity.

psi, a refreshing objective taste about what a geek is. I guess how you look at it can make that defition work, or some of the other less forgiving definitions work.

I think a healthy geek is doing something that in the end will be a better use of his time and energy than if he had done things along more normal lines. I would even tend to think that anyone that doesn't lean toward some form of geekness isn't really going anywhere at all. I've found that as kids get away from high school they tend to see that the things that made them geeks there are valued in the professional world, and they are the exact things that push some above others.

We have this wonderful four letter abbreviation here in Finland that sums up my feelings towards me being/not being a geek(whatever that means): EVVK.
Roughly translated: I Couldn't Care Less.
I generally try not to give a flying fuck about how the world at large attempts to define/classify me.
Yeah, sure, fine, whatever.

Hmmm hehe im on a posting rampage... since i never came over to the random musings side... ehhe

Well since i dont know the definition of what i am, maybe ill let all you who seem to know.

I sit in my computer room most of the day, i drink alot of coffee, i would rather draw than work, or clean. i play videogames, i have for awhile FPS, RPG ... i read fantasy.sci fi aswell, anything fiction, i detest the real world, i wish i could upload my brain into the computer where i wouldnt have to deal with society, my main attire consists of pjmas, but when i do go out, i wear alot of black, because my wardrobe is black, and i never have to worry about matching cause everything goes with everything. I am cyber. i love computers, the idea of AI, everything, yes im not actually that knowladgable in computers, i just learned how to network, im 20... so ive had my years of being the party animal, i lived outside my house without a computer *almost* for 2 years and i came back to it, before the 2 year thing i was a BBS junkie and online games like L.O.R.D were a way of life.

oh in school i was shunned, no one liked me hehe cause i was "weird" i think thats kinda funny cause all they did was sit and talk about boys and clothes, OH YEAH im a girl, which makes it all the better because in a male dominated Digital art society, i am again, an outsider, but i hide it well due to my male funtioning brain where i like to role play, blow things up and dream about sex ill never have again unless the computer gets those attachments... er... uhm... yeah... oh and the ultimate act of geekdom, i dated someone in texas for 6 months, by use of phone calls and IRC/e-mail.

so, what am i?

I guess I am one of the most geekish persons I have ever met.

why?

Things like "what would be the structure of Tetrahexanechloride look like?" pop in my mind in the tram.

I get sick from the rubbish people tend to talk on clubbings (so I never go there).

I love a rainy day with stormy wind more than anything.
So I go for spontaneous walks in the middle of the night when its raining.

I never liked reality very much, so I build my own over time. I guess its a common practice among geeks to build their own worlds- who says reality is REAL anyway? Its just a point of view, not a fact.

I guess I just can't stand being "normal" thats why i like geeks so much.. there is always something new about them.

Personally, I like the real world. I also like the "networld". The trick is to find a balance, so as not to let one get too much control.
Or whatever.

Well where I originally came from, you either had to clones, or the true, creative human being, or called a "geek". Who were the clones you asked? They were the people had no personal interest, except getting drunk every weekend, they bragging about it the next week, they all wore the same cloths, very materialistic, talked about nothing else but gossip, very nagative, probly very unhappy, hence the name "clone" was invented. Who were the "geeks"? The artist, hardcore pc gamers, hardcore console gamers, the all around weirdo (which is good), etc. You know what I mean.

Let's face it my fellow friends, we are the future, we run this world. We are the empire of the 21st century!!!!!

Woops I think im getting carried away

Hmmm for starts, i think your getting the definition of "geek" wrong In my opinion a geek is someone who does not communicate well with other human beings, which is the opposite of anyone posting on the board, and someone who looks to the future and always plans ahead and never know when he/she is ready to except what they have and who never fully uses or even understands their position in life. Which none of you do either because even if you read comics or look at art online or join in with discussions, its all a part of staying here down to earth, down to the gut of life. Its those who can never find who or where they are that are truly unhappy, and are beet down by society.

Many people used to call me a nerd, and i'm sure they still do. I goto an all-boys school, take a hour trip on the train, stay home and play computer game and do "work" on the computer all day, draw whatever i can, and hardly hang out with people.

On the flip side though, I go to parties, go to dances, meet girls(one of my fav), go to clubs, am on the HS football team, and like going all terrain biking.

Hmm I think that no one i've talked is a nerd, even though a lot of people might think so, we all have our ups and our downs doesn't mean that you can judge a person by just one side, you have to know them in every posible way and really communicate to understande eachother.

hmmm I think that might be a little more that 2 cents oh well

hey darkmoon- gimme a ring sometime, drop an email! hehehe

"and dream about sex ill never have again unless the computer gets those attachments... "

hahahahahahaha!!!! Girls thinking about sex? That's crazy, it's the other way around!

Count Zero, what you said is so true. Finding a balance is cool. At the moment I don't have that balance, I've been on the computer all day. Oh well.

But I like reality. Lately I've leaned more towards the 'geek' type but that's only because I've been focused on my art.
Someone said the definition of a geek is someone who can't communicate well, that's a good definition.
