Hello,
This is my first attempt at photoshop painting.

I created this image with the original picture (from a mag) sitting beside the computer. I made a point of not scanning it in.

This board has great feedback, I'm hoping for some with this image 'coz I know it's crap

Umm.. lets see..

That should be right code.

It has a lot of good points, like the eyes and the texture on the lips, but then the level of detail is a bit of inconsistent. The eyes are almos surreal in their sharpness, accented by the extreme shade of green (Which I quite like, actually) and the edges of the lips are really sharp. Avoiding blurriness can be a bit difficult, but a sure-fire way of doing it is to minimize the usage of soft brushes. The eyes, as I said, are really, um, eye-catching, though. Just keep at it, and you'll get it right. And remember that when you have the technique under control, it's time to move on from using magazine pics as reference materials. They're great for learning purposes, but (As has been said here before) it's better to avoid 'copying' when you go beyond learingn the technique. (Not that you should/can ever stop learning)

Hey,

Nice picture.. good detail... Pretty damn good at copying the image from looking at the magazine.. but the thing is she looks like a man crossdressing... ;

Its kinda hard to tell if she is a women or man. Her face shows a mans contour...
But keep up the good work!

Maybe she's a manly looking woman

I agree with Affected's statement about inconsistency. It looks like you worked one area at a time, a nose here, and ear there, a hair curl there. I would suggest working the whole page at once, going from general layout to specific details stage by stage, again working the whole image at each stage.

It's a good start; reminds me of my first stuff on the computer six or seven years ago. But as the folks above touched on, move away from the magazine pics AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Try doing your hand; it's always there. And focus on how the lights and darks shape the volume of your hand.

Ok thanks alot everyone.

I understand about moving on from magazine pics, but as you can probably tell from the fact that she looks a bit like a man, I'm not very good at getting the curves and proportions right with out reference. But that just requires practice right? I don't practice drawing enough, too busy with my 3d models and what not.

I plan to work on my drawing skills a lot more.

You were right Pidgeon, in order to get that detail I focused on each individual area one at a time, often working with a one pixel brush. Guess it shows.

i like the skin, especially in the nose & forehead area. the hair's pretty blurry, looks like you focused on the inner face detail and left everything else sort of "unfinished"
