1281 was a real fast page.

You know guys I believe thinking too much about rules could set you back. It's better in my opinion to lift forward the parts in your image that is important, if it is a character in the front one might tone down things behind him and etc.
The best method to learn according to an old colleague I had was to make mistakes, that was proven right to me everytime.

Howie- yeah you are right about that, its needed, we have to go through the stages of growth. Growth takes limitations I always tell myself Smile awesome portrait btw. Like the abstract quality of it!

Quintus- you learn by mistakes, and thinking about rules too much is a good mistake to make Smile honestly what it has taught me is there is a fine line between knowing in theory and knowing in practice. Theory is only a pointer, a signpost that may point to something that we can internalize and actually apply to our craft. I've got a huge backlog of things I understand in theory but haven't yet internalized in practice. Anyways badass painting! I like how you bordered it too.

Its always funny critwise when you see an artist who understands something theorywise criticize someone more experienced in painting. The ones who know just enough to think they know are the worst! (that has and will be me many many times Embarassed ) I remember spooge saying he preferred hearing 'that arm looks funny'...of course if a more experienced artist is critting a younger one its reversed. blah blah blah

trying to get more painterly, realize that simpler strokes can form better textures than trying to make crazy stuff on every surface-

lol touche' Smile
I know what you mean there, you know usually I stay out of conversations these days cause the subject itself is pretty deep and comes down to the individual focus too. Don't be too hard on yourself Lemur, you have a real good work method in the pieces that you post.

ZupZup and Lemur, thx guys.

ZupZup, wow, awesome experiment.

Tomasis> Haa. Gosh. Sorry about it. Haa. I mean, I can feel how strongly you feel about the concept of working you are suggesting. I notice that in some of my oil painter friends. I think they understand the theory on the subconscious level. Everytime i tried to ask them how they work. They will mostly give me a zen, one word answer. "Observe" nothing more. Actually the thing about all this writing is making me think even more. Haa. Without theory check? I don't know if i can handle a commercial job properly? When i'm in a rush to finish a work. I will use the most basic and logical working process couple with very basic theories? Grey scale, value then color? So for fast job i usually use the most simple and most un-inpsiring working process. When doing the piece, i will run checks on say, whatever theory I can rememeber when i'm working on the painting. Trying to simplific the theory check to just one key word. Contrast. But i guess it will take alot of painting before i can reach the level of using all this theory efficiently. Not the best way but, just making do. Razz By the way nice oil. Smile I think i tend to think too much when anwsering forum post and question. Haa. Sorry about the misunderstanding man. Smile Great discussion.

I just finish reading this book Art Theory For Beginners. It's been doing a part in messing up my brain too. Haa. Quite interesting. It talks about how Art Theory evolve until modern day. Art theories as in how people see art and how artist's peception of what art is evolve through time. Trying to get my hand on The Art Spirit by Robert Henri recommended by Mullins in his notes. Google book have some of the pages for preview on their site. Looks very interesting. My copy will only reach me in August.

Painted this over a very basic 3D model. Still feels it lacking in something. Can't really pin point the feeling with a problem now so i thought i just post and move on. Razz

thanks Quintus!

raytoh-thanks for mentioning that book-also where did you find the compiled Mullins notes? I searched the forums and got alot but haven't gotten it all by far, and it sounds like you found a good compilation. The boat looks great!

Lakka- love the traditional!

Just some rehash of an oldy inbetween cleaning house. I was thinking with these scenes its really all about lighting design at first, and then every stroke of development once the light is decided has to be within the limits of the light, can't be anything the light doesn't show. This must be a big part of what people call "stroke economy"...should've put something in this dude's hand lol

Lemur> Try this. https://www.yousendit.com/download/cnJpQk00WlRUWUJFQlE9PQ I have uploaded it to yousendit. It will expire on 31 july. Enjoy. Smile

My brain is always fill with other artists' interperation whenever i try to paint some stuff. Sometime i just wonder how do we grow into something else. Style wise. POV wise. More observation, more training and read more? I guess?

Hmm I am too lazy to change the url links. Evil or Very Mad

Playing around a littttttle. No I am not studdering, what? Shocked

Edit, ah ok I updated this page with the more recent urls.
Bonus picture you get during edit:

thanks mattyuk!

Raytoh-awesome! so much i had missed is in here, thankyou for putting that up! I read for like 4 hrs this morning lol. You know, i think to grow into something else does take alot of conscious effort, I think you are going in a solid direction at any rate Smile

Quintus-that second one is awesome, love how you are taking the quartering duplication to such a high artistic level. Seems like some sort of giant idol.

damn, there is so much to think as far as simplification in concerned

Very kind guys, thank you. Very Happy

I finished the logo for my site, to me it works pretty good now. Eventhough I call it finished it had to look sketchy, the balance is difficult for sure.... Work in progress shots can be viewed on my blog.

I have bent the rules here and there in the piece.

Just wanted to pop in and thank RayToh for the share! I absolutely love it and it has motivated me to paint again. I love it so much, in fact, I've ordered a print version (hardcover with a book cover) for myself so I can keep a physical version to mark up and dog ear.

Thanks again!

Tried to follow the advice on the first page, get the essence as quickly as possible. Going to make this my daily routine...

carbofos-awesome seeing the WCs!

some action and a memory painting. Memory painting is really fun cause you have to rationalize everything you see and really think alot spacialy-it sucks though when you get done. Two lessons in one, increase visual memory and increase intrinsic value of painting lol

obier, yea it's dark and apocalyptic. Perhaps the future for mankind? Thx. Smile

Raytoh, thank you, yea I agree I like the site and blog now, works pretty good in my opinion.
I gotta learn to save my things though, usually I am a throw away and start over personality. Twisted Evil

I gotta think about placement more, some things work good with compositonal thinking but there's the placement too and hmm that makes my head spin.

Omi-kun- nice! I like that thought of 'what can you do if you can't add detail?' figuring out how to play up the basics of the image and make it work better on the basic level. Lately I've been thinking of taking ref and redesigning light in it, playing up or down certain elements to make it hit harder. Lots of times I've changed form and kept light in ref but never tried to make light 'better' than the ref, hmm...

Raytoh- thanks! that last one was too complex for me, especially with the colors and the subtleties of warmer and cooler lighting. The lamppost is awesome! i need to start doing these monotone and simpler subjects- its amazing how much there is to figure out even then...one thing I think is the hardest is just thinking of perspective and getting eye level right from memory-is that even possible?

Matthew- really like these last couple! Thinking about placement and stuff like that in the abstract makes my head spin too-I think a good idea is to try and rationalize stuff like that with the narrative. Such as 'oh the boss knight will be bigger and higher than the other dudes cause hes da boss"...and also the classic 'does it look cool?' lol

Trying to do something industrial, it game me great pain then I just hid everything with some dusty glow...done!-
