Long time since posting any pictures here on the forums!
Having seen Micke, Sumaleth and some of the other old timers active around here got me inspired. Where's the old spirit of Sijun?
Sooo...I thought I'd upload something new...ish.
It's a personal project, part of a book I'm working on (and have been for way too long).
I like to use 3D for things like this. Model simple objects, light and paint on top. The 3D helps with composition and general construction of the scene. I find that limiting your 3D time forces you to work harder when painting. Very little is done for you and you have to improvise, which is always good practice. And I do enjoy painting, only not the tedious process of constantly correcting perspective.
Hope you like,
H

I love it!
I have ambition to master the part of skills as matte-painting..using objects and lighting in 3d seems be good idea and it allows you to push further in terms of subtler colors and lighting. Less struggle with perspective as you say.
Would you like make a simple tutorial about the process?
I look forward for more posts from you
big respect for your works! |

Thanks guys,
here's another one. Started out as a very quick sketch, but I spent a bit more time and tidied up a few edges here end there. No 3D this time. For this sort of image, I prefer to paint on one or 2 layers and as hi res as I can. I think image ended up at around 7000x9000.
cheers
H

Awesome! I like how you put detail only to places where it needs to be and left everything else sketchy. Very economic |
