Yeah Lemur. Personally I find it hard to be specific enough, and end uo with something I think looks, well, like something, and most often for any objective viewer it's a blob. I've been trying to do some reading to help me understand, but I guess I'm a bit stupid that way
ink is not by me, it's from a manga so credits go there!
stumbled across these 2 on a memstick, around 20x15cm

Thanks Lakka, Lemur, and selphooo
Creatures aren't my "forte", so to speak. I need to do more sci-fi/fantasy landscapes and creatures, so I can build a decent enough portfolio for Magic: The Gathering So... here's a crappy speedy I did before Clash of the Titan's came out, and I just went back and straightened a few things.

Nice Mitsui, I always like seeing how other people paint.
Thanks Lakka, cool traditional paintings
And thanks Lemur. Yeah I should have put more thought into what areas are occluded. I like your work btw, it always has an interesting brushwork flow.
If you have a basic white interior being lit by a cool natural indirect light, to get to the warm shadows sometimes the hue ramps towards blue-violet>magenta>red. Sometimes it goes the opposite way towards green>yellow>orange. What determines which way the hue ramps? I've just been going with what feels right, plus when there are local colors present it can make the decision easier. I'd like to understand this better so if anyone has some thoughts on the subject please let me know.
aand some photostudies

Jake > about the warm shadows, 2 things (at least) are at play...
1) the natural colors of the surfaces have the slightest warm hue to them, so when they're hit with a lot of white light, slightly more of the warm color gets reflected off and bounced around, especially in a scenario like the one you painted. With that much light, the color just bounces everywhere.
2) simultaneous contrast with the blueish light...we perceive the colors of surfaces to be warmer in shadow because the places hit directly by light is very cool. The difference causes the eye to believe the shadow is warmer than it truly is.
3) incorrect white balance in a photo. hah!
Regardless, your painting looks good. _________________ -krista
