hey Q.design... cheers man Very Happy heres a 6 step process of my last piece

#1 Initial Alechemy sketch using pull shapes and a low opacity so that layering occurs.

#2 Taken into photoshop. Grey overlayed in the background and I've begun to explore the shapes from Alchemy. Really dont know what im going to end up with at this stage.

#3 Here I've finished the main greyscale rendering. Now I'm a fan layering and relayering items, so what i've done is grabbed the Alchemy sketch and layered it again in Colour Dodge mode on a lower opacity. Means some of the interesting texture and shapes are still showing through.

#4 Now the fun starts. I've used a Colour Balance adjustment layer to bring in some colour to the piece. Additionally I've used the Distort>Lens Correction filter to bring in some vignetting and some Chromatic Aberration. Chromatic Aberration is a strange effect when i dont tend to use because i think it could be cheesy but sometimes it works nicely. Its most notable towards the edges of the piece near the arms.

#5 I've lowered the opacity of the colour balance and started overlaying bits of colour and decals. I've added some text and a texture across the middle. This is probably one of the most time consuming parts for me because you can litterally go crazy adding stripes and colours etc. The possibilities are near endless. That and the fact that I'm still learning how to do this myself.

#6 I've added a photo a friend took of some really nice looking clouds in the background and I've overlayed a photo of a wall I took in Europe on the rest of the armour. Then i've added some of the vignetting back in because it got a little lost and I've added in the little noise trick that Adhonis uses.

awesome awesome awesome everyone!

the insane lemur account got shut out cause I tried to change the email from a defunct one-cue it trying to send a confirmation to the defunct one, arrgh oh well lol

really trying to think about movement, and to think about abstract design and about form/world design. I used to think abstract was just slopping it on, but now I'm starting to get that its something that requires some serious consideration

doing a little Dune project with my girlfriend, she's a fashion designer so I'm doing some mood sketches to inspire how the costumes will look.
ornithopter-

Gurney Halleck always seemed like a cool guy, the floor bothers me in this one though

Important words there Lemur. i think i need to do a little less "slopping" myself Smile your stuff is really nice. I think I can see the uncertainty in your pictures that comes from wanting to push oneself.

Here is a 1h thing.. from memory of a picture i saw somewhere for 2 seconds...

I feel kind of lucky to have been shown this place.. really challenging stuff
you guys are putting out to a newbie like myself.. its awsome Smile

Here's another lasso tool sketch. I think it's a little busy/ hard to read. Fun practice though, really lets you get loose. Smile

Edit: Oh, and welcome to the forum Bierberg. Nice sketch to start it off!

thanks Bierberg! Uncertainty is right, sometimes I find myself scared to tackle an ambitious idea and end up sort of doodling around. I think the masters look at a problem and say "Im gonna figure you out!" I really like that memory drawing by the way, thats a great practice somewhere between life and pure imagination. I heard N.C. Wyeth only drew from memory, thats probly exaggerated though.

xbrianx- thats cool with the lasso, I'm gonna have to try that!

Zeromus-nice textures throughout that foliage.

Lakka-theres something really neat about that volcano.

another dune picture- Has anyone but spoogedemon been able to really paint the Baron? since I didn't want to completely fail I drew in feyd and piter, also think i should of went wild with adorning everything, cause without the baron ends up in a huge pajama shirt Mad

Really lemur, I love your palette. Also all the subtle value changes look real nice. I always go and pushpushcontrastpushpush and the end result is terrible, I'll try to copycat on the value front Laughing

rocks look good, Jake!

Jake G-thanks, I actually like your overcast picture-maybe with overcast watch the occluded darks more cause they will describe more in the pic, and when the atmospheric distance kills those darks you can play up the edge sharpness of pop-out areas, cause thats really the only thing to use since value contrast is so light. Maybe ambient sources in general require more thought in edge handling since we dont have such value range to pop them out for us...something I've got to think on...

Lakka-thanks! I think its important to have the old Howard Pyle thought of thinking of 2 values, light and dark- I know Mullins mentioned this a long time ago, and I recently read it in Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis (found it at my Grandma's house, so lucky!). I used to have the problem (and still do when I start to lick) of trying to describe things overly with value and it falls apart cause there is no sense behind it. If you know whats dark in the picture and whats light you can sort of play with that separation a bit, and can know where you really need to pull out a black or white color, and where you can use middle tones, cause middle tones can either look awesome or muddy, its just the context in which they are set.

I've been doing alot of black and white charcoal studies/thumbs, and sometimes if you start out digital in extreme black/white to understand the big separation, then find appropriate middles from there it can be an enlightening exercise! ( I like the green dino btw!)

Nachoyague- such nice movement in that portrait, I'm starting to think the sense of motion/movement of shapes and form is the heart of drawing, gesture I guess alot of people call it Razz

i little thing to get me started, was kindof testing out brushes
