matthew- i agree, the center layout i drew is hard to pull off- also the light on the floor at the kings feet doesn't make sense if it is supposed to be specular (my dad actually pointed this out, owned)

got some skeletons stealing the booze for today, i think im going to stick with this idea for tomorrow and maybe try it traditionally -the basics of this image could use strengthening, just gotta be specific about what I'm trying for

Insane Lemur, Is your father painting aswell? Smile

A critical stage to me is I believe when you hit a stage upon too much details, from there it is very easy to overkill it and leave the surface to smooth. Not sure if it is too smooth that makes it un-attractive? ..but it is easy to see when a surface is overworked.
Again though I believe it is the balance and nothing else.
Balance is killing me haha.
What's your thinking about this guys?

I reallly like that last one matthew, great composition. I think it's easy to tell when a surface is overworked because it doesn't match the rest of the image. If I put too much time into one surface and neglect the rest of the image it will stick out. I think your right that balance is key. You don't want the whole image to be super refined or to not have enough detail and be unrecognizable, although i guess it depends what your goal is. I think detail should be treated like contrast, if the whole image has contrast everywhere the viewer won't know where to look and i think the same is true with detail.

Howie, really appreciate the conversation. Yea my goal keeps going back and forth at the moment, keep confusing myself whether I should add more detail or not. Damn I am screwed. Smile
Thank you. Very Happy

the-insider, cheers my man. thx

Hideyoshi, I think the detailed is better, could be the light composition behind the object...

quicky.

thanks Raytoh-nice musketeer!

matthew- haha, no, thats why i got owned Crying or Very sad

very interesting painting and thoughts-i have that exact problem, you go into noodling and suddenly it all looks smooth and bland and you miss the point lol. And i think that is just the problem-thinking about things wrong, thinking about setting up for detail and detail making things look 'good' or real or something. But what we really want is for things to be interesting and exciting to look upon, and for that to work once you get an idea it is good to be a specific as possible about what you want and what its appearance should be to you,why it is interesting, maybe describe in words and pictures in your head-cause otherwise we try to use all the same methods to get things that really require a broad range of treatments (and its the differences that makes things interesting and unique huh?)

Like i said though im always forgetting this and falling into the blank mindset that "maybe if i use a smaller brush on this it will start to look cool with no thought into how 'cool' looks" when really it has to look cool before we can successfully get small on it.

this one i kinda got boring on, then realized it and tried throwing some effect on a layer, carving into it, repeat- like the ship better this time, need more thought into how i can make this light work though
