ZUPZUP, T_England, viag> superb
jOuey> sweet, and cool to see the process, maybe throw in some more variation in colour after the initial stages, the greys are a little repetetive in hue/saturation.
quick fiddling

thanks zupzup
I've been having a lot of trouble getting the right saturation in my highlights and especially in my darks and it's part of the reason my values suck. I'm using gouache for these btw.
I picked up a cad yellow and a deep green, maybe that will help? does mixing watercolor with gouache have any bad consequences?

Thanks Matthew Is Godzilla!
Here's something a little more representational...maybe 4-5 hours, best viewed on a perfectly black background.

Really digging your style Samsonsreaper.
Another study. This time it's of Finnish painter Albert Edelfelt's piece Kes (Summer). Tried to apply some natural brushes on this one. Maybe went a bit too far with it

WOW....lots of cool stuff.
Jake G - You are off to a great start, and will get a feel for what the paints will do the more you paint with them. Sometimes I find you have to build up the paint a bit to get the intensity that you are looking for. Also different papers will absorb paint differently as well giving your paints a different look.
Yes, you can mix both gouache and watercolor together. Gouache is basically an opaque watercolor. I often paint with a selection of transparent watercolors and then have a tube of white gouache, and maybe a few other tubes black, grey, etc.....that way I can paint both transparent and opaque by just mixing in the gouache.
I also like using what they call "process" white at times if I am looking to bring back in an extremely white highlight. _________________ WEBSITE |

Udal-Cool stuff man, great lighting
T_England- Thanks!
jOuey-thanks for sharing, nice compositions and mood setting!
Chupacabra- great demo, got any steps to that?
ZUPZUP- awesome shapes and rhythm!
Jake G- to add about your gouache and watercolor, Nathan Fowkes is a great example of a guy who uses those for the reasons ZUPZUP mentioned. Nathan Fowkes http://nathanfowkes.blogspot.com/
Anywho, this place is great! I love that this is a place for exercise and enlarging our vocabulary of each others methods and other learnings of such.
I did a study of Sargent's portrait of Carolus Duran
