octavian. i think there's plenty of room for new work it's just harder to discover amongst the throngs of artists putting stuff out there. maybe this isn't the right place for this but below are a few contemporary painters who make an impact.

alex kanevsky - http://www.somepaintings.net/Alex.html
harry ally - http://www.harryally.com/amain.html
jenny saville - http://www.artnet.com/artist/14945/jenny-saville.html
ian francis - http://www.ifrancis.co.uk/

just gotta keep looking, man.

eren - that last one has a real nice feel.

sometimes: Thankyou for sharing that. The image there looks really interesting. i can see how it would be useful in teaching you tonal values and light as you say, very complex. It does look quite fun though, like you could experiment and explore creativity (within the boundries of grisaille anyway)

my pleasure, i enjoyed looking.

octavian: interesting points you raise, i agree with many of them. and your take on illustration "a place to indulge in my imagination without concern for the fine art critic" i thought was a great way to see art, i think that's how it should be.

octavian: interesting thoughts! Personally, I don't really care anymore whether I create 'art' or not. For me, it's simply about being as skillful as I can. Portraying different things as realistically and technically impressive as possible. You can say, I am a craftsman rather than an artist and that's perfectly fine for me. Anyway, any concept 'artist' is more of an artisan imo.
That's why I don't like abstract art that was created without any acquired solid foundation in drawing and painting beforehand (emphasis on the last part of the sentence!). Your Duchamp example was perfect. If art is just all about weird opinions and worldviews, then screw it. I am fine as long as I can perfect my skills with drawing, lighting, composition etc. You might wanna ask: what's more difficult and challenging and thus skillful? Hanging a toilet bowl upside down or painting the same as realistically as possible (maybe even from your imagination)...?
I simply want to hone my technique as close to perfection without really making a statement or creating 'art' (well, at least not yet...).

just some of my views... Smile

There are too many opinions in the world and everyone seem to think they have the answer or question regarding an opinion.
If I write in here it is not because that I want applause, just expressing to you how I feel.
Was gonna write something about critique and the system but it comes down to opinion.

I will keep the discussion on minimal from now on, let's just paint. Very Happy

We should introduce ourselves a little more. What kind of music do you guys listen to? Smile
Anyone been listening to "Shiny Toy Guns"?
At the moment of painting this one I listened to the album with "Ludo" album title "you're awful, I love you", really good album I can recommend it.

everyone's on fire!

med, you owe me a new keyboard. I had green tea coming out of my nose seeing that. Pure gold right there, not to mention technically impressive.

I watched the first three episodes of Merlin and was a little surprised how much it deviated from the mainstream Arthurian myth. The show is also a little too predictable (boy wizard running around saving people, and has a mentor in the form of a mystical creature..eh..) I hope there will be some surprises down the road, and play to the strength of it not following the established legend.

vyle, Leopard, brush9: awesome!

a study

vaugh: yeah. i agree completely. could have called any one of those stages done but i appreciate the way he continues to explore without getting attached to any particular stage. he has some interesting thoughts on "beginner's mind" if you read his interview on vivianite.net.

i love that landscape you just posted. it has a great feeling of quiet and isolation.

synnical: that study is great. was it from imagination, photo or life?

happy to have found this forum.
