Finished with the "shit kickers." 10.8" x 14.25" Oil on paper on panel. I drew the initial sketch with pencil on paper from a still life steup. However, I wanted it a bit larger for the painting, so I scanned the drawing, and printed it a bit larger, then adhered the print to Gatorboard, shellacked several coats, and started the oil painting.
EDIT: Here's a detail close up

Nice one.
May I ask what glue you used and what kind of shellack and if you know if acrylics can be painted over shellack without problems? Since those are waterbased and all. I haven't heard of shellack priming for paintings before, but then I never looked into oil painting(only oil based paints I ever used were on gaming miniatures years back.) |

I use "Yes" glue. And Zinsser Bull's Eye clear shellac.
Shellac is a smooth non-absorbant surface to paint onto. I have heard that Rockwell used shellac for that purpose, to easily wipe and redo. I've also heard that he would shellac on top of painted layers to be able to continue wiping away mistakes. I don't think that is a good idea, but Rockwell had different priorities. He was working under deadlines with the ultimate product being a magazine print.
Shellac is brittle, so if used, it should be on a solid support. Have no idea about how acrylics would work over shellac... not sure it would be a good idea. _________________ HonePie.com

Interesting stuff eyewoo. I actually thought you'd use it to protect the base drawing as well. In case you're not happy with the first layer of paint.
I'm not sure using acrylics on shellack would be a good idea either. The interest I had in shellack when researching it was really just for woodwork. It could be allright with any paint I guess, as long as there are no solvents in it that also solve shellack. But I know that water can stain a nice shellacked table top for example, so I guess I'm not sure how it would affect the painting really.
Maybe I'll try it once I get me some shellack. It could be useful to know in case I want to paint something on a shellacked wooden surface and "trap" that painting in some final layers of shellack for protection as well. |
