These are amazing... I like the last one in particular due to the awesome angle it's at.
I'm curious what your rates are for doing comps like these... |

The crashed chopper totally did it for me. But then came the rest and I'm once again struck by the continuity you are able to put in your works. I think the small one of the baroque room is my favourite. Such nice angle, lighting and values. _________________ CA SB|Flickr |

Well, hellooooouuh!
What heck is this?! Amazing! You're way too good.
Just a couple of questions - How much time did you had for a one piece and how many drafts did had to do before you made a one concept image or illustration? I'm interested about this because, when I had a change to make few concepts. I've usually given to me so few time, that I'm not able to make many rough sketches, when I have to start to paint the image and of course the result isn't quite which I was intend to... _________________ www.pirkkaharvala.com

wonderful!
I love the ones that are a bit rough around the edges best
like notic said, would be interesting to see your process (which you promised in your previous post )
(oh and one tiny crit would be that in the last image- the papers are quite evenly spaced out in both "corridors")
thanks for sharing! _________________ homepage:blog

Hey John... I showed these to a friend - oil painter - and he thought you used a lot of 3D software to produce them... I told him I was pretty sure you did not and and that they were done using Photoshop... right???
Either way, great stuff... _________________ HonePie.com

Hey guys thanks for the replies! wow ive been gone for too long
Sumaleth, yes sish! luckilly things are starting to go the other direction now, less and less broken stuff.
Synnical, yes I did the graffiti too, glad you like them, theyre mostly nicknames for my pets and people i know and so on,
THe paintings vary a lot in time depending how complex the view is, sometimes I do a wireframe sceenshot to keep the perspective, it can take between 3-5 days to get to this lever I guess, soetimes even more if im like, slow...
sometimes its better to make 3, 4 sketches before starting on the big one, just so u know what the hell to paint! painting on something you don't really grasp will sort of ruin the image. planning is important, and most companies don't understand that the concept art they order, will save them many many many hours, so th econcept artist shouldnt be stressed IMHO (creative anxiety is hard enough ehhehe) but thats the dream world I guess...
EyeWoo: hey man how you doing! Most of these are actually 100% from scratch, without 3D programs, a few of them I have had a plate, here's an example of the computer room, where I rendered 4 cubes to get the perspective right, but nowadays even this takes too much time for me, rather than just paint it, but I'll take any screengrabs for free to paint on
as yo can see the usage of 3D doesnt really mean lighting, texturing or anything else than just building up all the vanishing points, or to use descriptive geometry. (well, i did have to place the vanishing points since all I had were the cubes)
the ones that I used perspective help in 3D were of course the computer room, and the library, and the steel mill room with the glowing thing was actually painted on top of an early WIP of the actual level.
I'll see when I have time to make a tutorial, to be honest its jus the same technique as a lot of you, brushes, lasso tool and some love for painting _________________ www.johnliberto.com |
