First draft for a marinade label a friend is putting into production. Double entendre intended.

hehehe looks funny
2 suggestions:
1) the bling bling glow of his tooth connects with the white spot on his cheek, i would suggest to tone down the cheek as it is on the other side
2) maybe it would be cool to have Big Willie's written in a different color as Meat Rub. and also i find that whereas the white outline works with the Meat Rub text, it doesnt go that well with "Big Willie's" |

Haha, nice one.
As Vahn wrote already, the flare's placement is rather awkward. I wouldn't tone it down tho, just rotate it so it doesn't meet the cheek's highlight which could be faded a little big. Looks more like a pimple than a highlight at the moment, esp. because it's saturated so much.
The type is popping out way too much. I'd tone it down or change the hue a little bit so it doesn't outdo Willie's persona. Also, I'd try to get rid of the white outline. Try a decent drop shadow instead, with a big blur, little distance. That will make it pop out in a more comfortable way. Not sure about the typeface on "Big Willie's". What you got right now is a type with a lot of black space, compared to an almost 100% colored typeface on the upper line with little black. That's what makes the Meat-Rub overly dominant. I'd also try to get some texture into the orange parts of the type.
Other than that, I love it. _________________ CA SB|Flickr |

You know... to me it looks like the guy has a stomach ache but pretending that everything is fine. And that's why the pic looks funny I guess.
You probably don't want such associations for meat rub label :) |

I was thinking it all needs to pop a lot more - higher contrast, stronger colours. It is too low contrast to be seen when wrapped around a bottle on a dinner table or in a fridge, I think it would look like a large beige panel. The wood effect would be barely visible I imagine or might look as though a solid background has gone wrong. The colours, even if they stayed tasteful, need to bam off the jar, and that character needs to be visible across the room if possible.
However what you've done looks great in your post! I like all the work, I just think it's all too subtle. It looks like it would suit a round label quite well. |

I think it's a great illustration, as illustrations go. For advertising I think the comments are right - more color/contrast. He looks a little creepy to me too, not the sort of fellow I'd be taking food from without seeing someone else try it first _________________ -Anthony

I think the Background ruins it, perhabs it should be more dark.
The Illustration for itself is very nice! _________________ *

Apart from changing the backgrounds color/value to achieve some more contrast to the text and guy, I do think it's a rather hilarious brand in the making. Pretty sure it looks like intended and isn't exactly aimed at the standard customer. Maybe some people will get ideas and buy and try it in uncommonly ways even. |

Thanks everyone. The type and background were just placeholders for this draft. You're right, they don't work. Aside from that, I'll fix the glare on his cheek and try not to think about how creepy this guy is. My roommate described him as offensive-looking, I think that about sums it up. Unfortunately Will is actually pretty offensive-looking so I'm stuck with it. |
