I just read in the paper this week that Bell Sympatico here in Canada has put limits on how much you can download in a month to ---------> 5gigs! After which it will cost $7.95 (CND) per GIG. Other high speed services (like the one I use) will soon follow.
This is really, really terrible news. I can tear through 5 Gigs in a single day at times. I don't watch TV anymore, if I need entertainment I turn to the net. Anyone else facing this outside of Canada? States? How do you deal with it?
The other troubling thing is, since the limit is the sum total of all that you both upload and download, no one is going to share files anymore with X, Y or Z service because uploading to a stranger is eating into your time online. Even running a dedicated game server will stop looking attractive to most people since it reduces your time.
Bummer.
(did I mention that rates will actually go up as well?) |

yeah, my ISP is ATT&T cable and about a year ago I was enjoying speedy uploads...then they decided to cap uploads at 14k, which is horribly stupid because I liked sharing files over IRC and my ping in online games went up....and then, not shortly after ATT&T Broadband ran into financial trouble and turned into "attbi" or some such nonsense...things have been going downhill even since...The price even went UP even though the quality of the service has gone down considerably! *sigh*
It's better than dial up though! hahAh!...I'd go insane if I had to go back to THAT again... |

The limit has been in effect all month long. You can check to see how far over the limit you are through your user control panel on their page.
Clicky Click
I think it fucking stinks, too. I'm over my limit this month. |

yeah it's really sad this is happening. i use shaw cable. i know they upped the monthly fee. i don't know what it's capped at now, if it even is. either way it sucks. what's the point of highspeed internet if you can't use it? or at least not for very long.
games shouldn't be affected too much. the packets are small (they got to be to keep the lag down), but then maybe a game server itself is differnt. but lets hope for the best. |

I have the same problem with my cable modem company, let's you download at speeds up to 350KB/s but charges your 10$ extra for each additional GB after the 5GB limit. Luckily, it seems I have an older manufactured Samsung modem that doesn't allow bandwidth reporting on my end, which is a good thing.
I think everyone's in the same boat in some way or other. |

That's real bad news for cable and highspeed net users. And really cheeky for companies to start charging for this. Line rental is expensive enough without additional costs. It's like only being allowed to watch 5 hours of TV a day or something.
Even worse for me is that my home line is a 56K and we don't even have access to higher speed lines here >_< |

Bang, poor bang, they wised up to the dangers of giving too much freedom. now the RIAA is in on things, and ISPs know about warez. they prevent you from using usenet (average retention of messages on all local ISPs for usenet is less than 4 days), they are charging more for less service because they have a monopoly, and they give access to our email to the government (in the US at least) thanks to our wonderful USA PATRIOT act. I for one was shocked that a bill called the USA PATRIOT act could have anything bad in it, but apparently it does. I'll go sulk now.
PS- why can't I organize my thoughts? I keep posting in stream of consciousness |
