thanks for the explanation mikko. It�s strange that you can exaggerate value in a greyscale painting but not in a colored one.. Does the brain interpret a grayscale image differently than a color image maybe? If it's in grayscale maybe the brain looks at it in a more abstract manner and in color it gets compared to the real world more... abstract paintings does not apperar to be limited by this inverse relationship between saturation and value in the same way...

Saturation plays a huge part in how we interpret value.
In my experience painting from life,saturation tends to cause a sort of lightening of value.
Saturation also plays a huge role in composition,always reserve your most saturated parts of the image for your focal point.....also,always try to maintain the highlight/shadow hue variation in terms of temperature...this is tied to saturation in many ways.

edit: Freebooter is my little brother, so I'm being more straight (honest) with my crits than usual.

Misc: I think it's just easier to get away with fooling our perception in greyscale, there's just less information to confuse one's brain. It's also way much more easy to control the value structure, which ultimately leads to the viewer looking at the right focal point. Note that the more saturation you add to a painting, the more 2 dimensional and abstract it will look, since the reality we see has little "pure colour", unless you look at neon lights.

Watmough: so true. Also people should note how 90 percent saturated red can have the same "visual weight" as a 40 percent blue. I mean, if 100% is pure colour.

Great pic Freebooter, though I wish the pose was stronger , it works now but there's not much tension in it... it would be better I think if the sword was much higher and the body in a more extreme position that would focalise the tension of the fight. I'll try to do an overpaint after work.
