You know how you can do that in Photoshop 7 and select whatever is on that layer? How do you do that in CS2? They seem to have gotten rid of that feature. Does anyone know of a quick shortcut key that selects all the stuff on a specific layer? Driving me nuts. I seem to be driven nuts easily.

You have to have the cursor sitting on the brush symbol before ctrl-click. I believe in CS it could be anywhere on the layer in the LAYERS pallette, but in CS2, it has to be on the brush symbol.

thanks Phil - do you mean the layer thumbnail? I wasn't sure exactly if that's what you meant, but doing that seems to do the trick.

In any case, works now. Sorry for the interruption. Please carry on.

For two reasons... They take up too much space... Some of my illustrations have hundreds of layers... and most of my layers have just a bit of stuff on them and the thumbnail is not helpful in figuring out what's there.

Labeling the layer is much better for me, or simply using ctrl-alt right click to jump to the layer and make it active is the way I do it. I use ctrl-alt right click all the time...

you can have Photoshop just display whats on the layer - so if you only have a small detail on a layer it will thumbnail just that small detail

if you goto Pallet Options in the Layer Pallet and select under Thumbnail Contents - Layer Bounds, it works out whats on the layer and displays it

that way it won't show what looks like an empty layer, i find it useful when i'm designing websites or doing photo editing..

Grouping Layers is a big help in managing alot of layers as well Smile

I'm a nested grouping fiend... Smile

Didn't know about "layer Bounds." Thanks for that ... but, for me, Even if the thumbnail just showed the active part of a layer, I wouldn't find it that useful... I still like to see as many layers or groups of layers as I can in the LAYERS palette.

OK here's a new one. Has anyone had this happen?

In CS2, my keyboard shortcuts will suddenly change. For instance, instead of changing brush size, [ and ] will now cycle through the layer palette, highlighting the layer above or below depending on if I am hitting [ or ]. WTF. And if I hit CTRL - T to access the free transform tool, it creates a copy and transforms *that*. WTF. CTRL- S opens up a "save as" dialogue instead of just saving. WTF. WTF??!?

BTW that layer bounds tip was useful, thanks B0b.

That happens quite a lot for me as well... everything just gets out of whack. it happens so much - maybe 2 or 3 times a day - that I found a quick fix that solves the problem without having to reboot. Just grab anything on any layer and hold down ctrl/alt to dup and move it... then simply hit ctrl/Z to undo it. That also seems to get all the shortcuts back in sync... wierd... Question

are you guys using MACs or PCs?

edit: Eyewoo, It sounds like you're on PC. When was the last time you reinstalled windows? is your photoshop computer the same computer you surf/game/whatever with? Over time windows just seems to get tired and photoshop suffers for it.

Kinda sounds you need a fresh start.

Dang Phil, I'm just gonna email you directly from now on! Very Happy That worked.

Awetopsy - I'm on a PC. Yeah Windows just sludges up after a while, and I've had this PC since 2003. Probably about due for a coronary.

Awetopsy ... on a PC and actually I reinstalled my WinXP about a month ago. I had a disaster with a blue screen reboot that couldn't find the OS, so had to do the reinstall. the PShop problem did not go away. In fact, as I recall, it was never a probelm with any earlier versions of PShop... just CS2.

My keyboard shortcuts sometimes go crazy too, but that's because i have several languages mapped to it and through some fluke manage to switch from english to portuguese or swedish. Resetting the icon back to english usually restores normality.
