Have you all seen this? I did a search for this in the discussion thread and didn't find it so I thought I'd post the link. I'm usually the last to know so I'm sorry if this is old news, especially since it was added to Youtube back in august:

Seems very relevant, especially for digital art. Any thoughts? Any more info out there? |

heh don't worry octavian, that was news to me. it was actually really enlightening, although they'll need to invent special techno-gloves before i take it seriously. |

Yeh this is actually a bit old. It's still very awesome though. here's the original website.
http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/
It works in a very clever, but simple way. It relies on total internal reflection, so light (probably Infrared) is shone in from both sides of the perspex (just an example) and when a finger presses it the total internal reflection fails at that point of contact and light scatters back behind the screen and is captured with a camera. Then its a case of motion capture with blob tracking.
Oh and btw, the minority report interface with the glove based system has been done already. It actually isn't that difficult or in fact much different in principle than this method. The hardest thing is to do this kind of stuff remotely, no gloves or touch screen type of thing. That is really difficult, lots of complex object / motion recognition and far from perfect but there are plenty of researchers working on this right now. |

Bob, Ian Jones: thanks a bunch guys. I am so nerdy stoked over this stuff!
Notic: I thought the same thing right away. In fact I sat back in my chair, whizzing my arms around imagining what it would be like to sculpt and model that way, also how it would feel to draw using both hands! Too cool.
Udal: well I'm glad someone else out there is in the dark about nerdy tech stuff. Brothers in blindness! |

I remember a documentary on tv where a paralyzed person could use a windows style computer desktop by a technology that registers his brain activity. So the patient had a Matrix style wire going to the back of his head, and he could move the cursor by thinking about directions.. It was clumsy, but once this kind of stuff becomes more efficient, it could be very interesting. |

Mikko K, I saw that same documentary... wasn't it something about the future of cyborg tech? anyway, It would be really neat to have both brain activity and hand gestures registered on some sort of visual display.. that way I could change tools with my mind and still use my hands to paint. sure I could prolly use my brain to paint with that sort of tech, but then I'd turn into a complete blob.
ian Jones: thanks! I create music as well and that blew my mind. |

I saw some hospital TV series where they applied similar technology.. only that the paralyzed person could now communicate through computer, so the computer spoke based on his brain activity. The first thing the guy said to the nurse was "kill me. let me die. please." etc.
but I guess it's cool if the patient is motivated to continue his life.. |
