Offer expired.

Thanks to anyone who might have been interested, but who was put off by the short deadline.

You say that 30,000 people will see this magazine. This means you are printing probably 30,000 copies. I highly doubt your printing company is willing to do this for free, so therefore I think you should not expect a graphic artist to do this kind of work for free either. We have to earn a living somehow too, so I find it hard to stomach that this is not a paying job. It sounds like it should be.

I offered this as a "get your work seen" opportunity. If people don't want it, that's fine, but please don't complain.

Yes, around 30.000 will be printed.

And finally, this is a NON profit newsletter.

i think ian has every right express what he feels.
let me ask u, as the layout designer, are you getting paid to do what you do?

im going to say that you do, so why should double standards apply to graphic artists who do the actual meat of the design?

please forgive our initial prudence, but there have been numerous others before you asking for work with no pay, choosing to be an artist and sustaining an income is not an easy thing!

I agree that making a living as an artist can be hard. And yes, I do get paid.

I think the correct perspective to look at this would be one of: "Okay, so I don't have any commercial work to do today. Let me do this and get some media exposure. Who knows, there may be a bunch of important people seeing my work and wanting to commission me for more later."

The important people bit is really an understatement, since all the legislature in california gets our newsletter, including the governor.

Or perhaps someone who is not yet established would like to get his foot in the door.

Many possible scenarios. In any case, since nobody has been interested, I've been working on a drawing myself. Not too shabby, but not really "Sijun" quality either, hehe.

There is still time though, IF anyone is interested. A few more hours, then I close the offer.

Actually, there was no problem with your request. You were straightforward and honest. You weren't promising anything more than exposure. The problem was that you gave people all of 17 hours notice to plan, sketch and render a fully realized painting, or at least something worth getting noticed for. If you had posted this a week earlier, you might have gotten some actual paintings.

But asking us to do you a solid the day of the deadline? good luck.

I know. It would appear as bad planning on my behalf, but sometimes stuff happens in a production pipeline and people make funny requests Smile

Thanks though for your understanding. If I have any more opportunities, I will make sure to (attempt to) post them more in advance.

I agree with Impaler. There was nothing wrong with your request. I was not implying that you don't have the right, because you do have the right to ask. You did it in an honest manner too. What I was goading from you was to see if you were able to pay, as from what I saw of the facts at the time it looked like an unfair deal. Sorry about the fuss.
