Hi Noel - it has been a long time. How are things in the Great White North? How's married life treating you? _________________ - Tom Carter

well..
Ive been doing a lot of different things lately.. sadly not much art. Actually after I stopped doing it professionally, I kinda lost my drive to draw... (Any one ever experience that?)
Anyways, I went on to do Computer Training for a while and from there went to business school. After that I started my own computer repair firm and have since shut that down.
Now I work For RE/MAX of Western Canada as a trainer/support guy. Steady Work, pretty decent money so I certainly cant complain. Plus I now have time for my family.
As for my wife and I, we've now got 2 kids.
Caleb who's 18 months and Hannah who is 1 month.
Hopefully soon Ill be able to start drawing again. I have felt the burn lately which makes me feel better... as its been a while since I really did any drawing.
Anyways.. enough blabbering from me... whatchoo guys been up to lately?
(Great White north? It is neither White nor all that north.) |

Wow, two kids already? Wasted no time, eh?
Don't feel bad about not doing art. The only reason anyone should feel bad about something like that is if he really loves doing it and can't find time for it. Lack of interest just means you have other interests in your life currently--there's nothing wrong with that. Art is not the only fulfilling endeavor in the whole wide world afterall.
Elena and I are still undecided about children, leaning towards not having any. The older we get, the more we enjoy peace and quiet, and the idea of a screaming baby becomes less and less appealing. Also, Elena has close bonds with her nephew and niece--to the point where she played a significant role in their upbringing since birth. She's like a second mom to her niece, so parenting isn't as exciting and mysterious as it would've been if she wasn't so nurturing with her niece and nephew. Her nephew is now an adult, and has since grown distant and became a big disappointment in general--the kind of person people refer to as a wanabe loser. It broke her heart to watch him ignore all well-intentioned advice and help she's given him, and it angered her to watch him fuck up over and over--just totally selfish, arrogant, yet unmotivated and talentless. Exactly the kind of guy we'd kick out of Sijun in a heatbeat.
Another strong influence was from an author we greatly admire. One of her books is our favorite book ever--a very profound and moving book about the journey of life and the choices we make. I managed to get in touch with the author and we became friends. She told us the horror story of how all of her love and affection for her children were trampled upon as soon as they became adults and decided to defect to their estranged but very rich father. She was not allowed to attend her daughter's wedding because the father's girlfriend would be there. That's what enduring hardship to bring up two children alone got the poor woman in the end. Her current husband also had a bitter experience with his children, and both just couldn't believe their misfortune when it comes to parenthood. From my perspective, the two of them are wonderful people, but then again I don't know their children, so I only know one side of the story.
Damn, I was supposed to just say hi, but look what happened.
Anyway, we just moved back to the States for good (Sunnyvale, Cali) and I'm looking for a new job currently--either art directing or concept art. |

Hey, Sunnyvale- my hometown! There's a ton of game industry there, man. You'll have no problem. My childhood house was on Corvalis Drive (near the old Sara School andf Petrini's Market). |

I think most of us have that side to us, but in varying degrees. I'm guessing that maybe one day in the future when my career's more stable, I'll feel more relaxed about having kids.
You should post some pics of your lovely little family. |

Ok.. so another eight months later I post again. I have been browsing the forums... but been to lazy to log in and post.
I have started drawing again.. and loving every minute of it. I got a contract last year that tied up my whole summer with drawing electrical refrigeration parts. turned out awesome but not 2 weeks after the project was complete I was doing a backup of all my old stuff, Which I hadnt done in ages and the backup hard drive crashed... right after formatted my machine... needless to say I lost tons of my art. Tons.
Regardless I will be posting some of my artwork again soon. Maybe even tonite.
Cheers all. |

That SUCKS. Sorry to hear it.
Good to see you back, though.
Out of curiosity, so I can keep up my mental log of what drives not to buy, what was it? |
