You need to work with reference for a while, before trying to create textures and shading from your head. You've made a lot of guesses in this image, and almost none of them are right. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

Thanks man i appreciate the honesty, but I guess I should have said earlier that this was just a really quick sketch and I was goofing just shading randomly cause i wanted to try and accomplish something with the color. Thanks again man next time I will actually post something I have put more than like 30 minutes into. _________________ \m/-_-\m/ |

Come on, man. In your first post you said the sketch was "awesome" so you were obviously quite pleased with it. Now it's just a "quick sketch" that you were "goofing just shading randomly"? I've seen people make complaints about how they don't get comments on their art, and this is one of the reasons that people are hesitant to make the effort.
New Artist: Hey, check this work out. I can't figure out how to get the colors right. Help!
Helpful Sijun Member: Use reference images and draw what you see.
New Artist: Nah, just kidding, I only spent a few minutes on this and I don't care about it at all.
Helpful Sijun Member: That's five minutes that I'll never get back, thanks for wasting my time. |

sorry it came off that way. That was not my intention at all, I was just trying to do something with pencil and didnt care about the shading or the quality but to see if using this tutorial i found would work, truly my appologies to drew and sumaleth but here is an update with actual time going into it now and im still working on blending the shadows together, advice on shading and maybe some pointers on how to get the gravestone to look more like a gravestone would be awesome. Again sorry to those that offended

I`m by no means an expert, in fact I am just learning myself. But in light of the fact that I can`t seem to get any responses either I decided to put in my two cents. The back of the headstone on the right end looks kind of furry to me (the jagged areas?) Sorry I can`t really say much about shading, but the hair might be able to use some work, and there is a nice tutorial on www.about.com for it (i need to practice drawing hair myself). Sorry I can`t be of more help. You may also want to try to define the zombie guys head a bit more to distinguish it from his shirt. _________________ If people bathed in gravy... I`d be a cannibal! |

I am merely an observor..but I will add my two cents because I like the concept
This is just what I would like to see..I am not an expert..not even an artist
THAT said:
1) The colors are too light...perhaps a more somber tone with more defined line..add some drama
2) The shading on the gravestone..Try some shadow on the side. That would improve perspective and add to the gloom. Gravestones are conventionally grey granite. The texture is too sandstone..
3) The head of the man crawling out of the grave needs work..maybe some skull showing...but his forehead rresting on the grass is a nice touch. He would be gaunt, worn disheveled. At first glance I thought the head was a pumpkin and the arm was a drapery over the grave which brought my attention to the lettering on the stone..rather than the idea the picture intended to convey
Conventions ..such as dark somber for graveyards..a bit of skull showing through the undeads damp and dirty strands of hair may be overdone but the first post on the thread is a more technical way os saying..you need to work from reference...because none of the conventions or even reality conforms to your shading
I really like the concept ..the idea is worth development |
