I asuumed you were using a bitmap or raster program... I think you cleared it up now that I understand you are using both PSP and CorelDRAW. Probably should have read your posts more closely...

PSP....PAINTER..I don't have to CDraw has a bitmap program. I reposted that image..I am learning shading..I am not too good with it yet..so that is why...it is is called Study ..Take a look
A QUESTION:
I went into the installed MicroSoft Paint program in accessories on Windows. Does anyone know what the equivalent brushes would be in Painter for the basic pen and the spray can?
I cant find either of those brush effects in Painter..That really clear line of the pen (not the calligraphy effect) and that rough spray..

There isn't anything in MS Paint named "basic pen" or "spray can" so I'm guessing you mean by "basic pen" the Line or Curve tools, or maybe the Pencil tool, and by "spray can" the Airbrush tool. You may need to fine tune the settings even more for the brush variants I suggest. Also, you'll need to accept the fact that MS Paint is a very basic program while Painter's brush technology is immensely more advanced, complex, and offers the artist great control over how the brush variants can be adjusted. Because it's meant to allow the artist to paint expressive brushstrokes, there's a great deal more interaction between the artist's hand and Painter. We can even reset Brush Tracking to respond to our own individual way of painting, our hand pressure and speed. Assuming you're using a pressure sensitive tablet and pen, all that will come into play.
Here are some suggested brush variants to get you started.
MS Paint: Line or Curve:
Painter: For the most narrow line, Pens' 1-Pixel variant. For wider lines, Pens' Flat Cover variant and on the Property Bar, adjust the Size slider as needed. To paint straight lines, click the V key, click at the beginning point, click and hold near where you want the line to end, then drag to the exact point where you want the line to end and let go. Or instead of click/hold/drag/let go, click again in another location to continue the line at another angle. Click the V key again to begin a new line in a different location. Click the B key if you want to paint freehand strokes (curved). You'll need to paint the curve the way you want it as there's no way in Painter to drag the stroke to alter the curve the way it's done in MS Paint. However, since you're comfortable with vector software you could use Painter's vector based Pen tool or Quick Curve tool to draw lines and curves and adjust them however you like.
MS Paint: Pencil:
Painter: Pencils' Cover Pencil - In the Brush Controls' General palette, change the Subcategory to Flat Cover. In the Size palette or on the Property Bar, change Size to 1.0.
MS Paint: Airbrush:
Painter: Airbrushes' Coarse Spray variant. In the Brush Controls' Size palette, move the Feature slider to 0.5. In the Spacing palette, uncheck the Continuous Time Depositon box. In the Airbrush palette, adjust the Flow slider as needed to make the brushstroke more or less dense.

I don't use a tablet...I use the mouse or the mouse pad..
I was trying to create textured transparencies and I thought I needed the texture of that sray can..but I found a method that can be used to thin or thicken the pixel density.. that way a textured transparancy can be changed in color/density/surface texture on the fly..Or maybe not.."grin"
I posted the latest results of grey/pale green on my web page..second image down..so you can see why I needed that particular density..

I agree entirely. Out of frustration I have uninstalled PIX from my machine more than once, only to later find a real need for some of it's functions. I hear it is more stable now but last time I opened it the thing crashed on me again, and I still haven't decided if I want to keep it or not. |

An off topic question tucked into a far corner because I don't want to start a thread for general discussion on the topic. I couldn't draw before I had vector capability so I never thought about this question..
If I have a photograph of a movie star and I want to make a line art in CDraw Vector..no scan no trace no copy and paste..is that a violation of copyright? |

I will clarify the above post..
All of my portrait art has been based on tutorials about classic proportions..using the proportions of the head and body to draw a human face...Now I want to start drawng real people ..Can I draw a movie star from a photo In other words...Can I use the photo as a Model? |

Yes you can... but for personal use only. It would only be a violation if you tried to sell it or use it in a commercial way.

Thanks for the quick reply..I wanted to check before I invested any time in using that photo as a model...
I guess the best way is to continue to create using proportions and classic methods..using old masters as guides...
Thanks again..you saved me the time of fooling with a studio photo..time I can use to study proportion and shading..without models or take photos of my own...not studio quality but..good enough.. |

Ok..I wanted the studio photo because real people have wrinkles and hair..and clothes..
I found a source of models that may work to learn more complex form than anime/cartoon line but with different shading/line detail than Da Vinci./Michelangelo .and I can learn hair, wrinkles and folds
Russian Icons..that is what I will use
Greek Orthodox Icons.yes indeed..smoother and better than movie stars...but less cofusing line images than real hairy wrinkled people.. |

Nice, just joined this forum and I found a question I could answer!!
lol
I prefer Photoshop over painter because;, like others have stated, painter is way to complicated and I cannot create custom brush nibs for use with artist oils, which is somewhat annoying.
Photoshop is simple, yet quite powerful, especially if you spend some time and create some decent custom brushes.
Also, Photoshop�s interface is so much easier to use, painters interface is quite chunky and �in your face�

I use Painter in f**ing 100%, many bugx but this is it. for real.
For  me FU*k photoshit .....is slow cow for fat girls . painter is for real ;and hides manymanymany secrets ,and is cheaper. and MADBALL ,and HSL is best way for color .more dirty dirty staff for dirty nasty people.and I wait for more! |

3nasty... there was something strange about your post, like when you see a wild animal walking through the neighborhood, acting strange, and you can immediately tell it is rabid.
Anyways, I tend to prefer the slow cow for fat girls, as it gets in my way less, just seems its easier to learn painting when your not busy with learning the program instead. |

| I bought painter IX and I was so excited until I found out it's color picking tools are awful. I hate the color triangle so much. It's not accurate at all and makes things a headache. If Painter had HSB sliders I'd use it instead of photoshop because it allows greater control of the colors. Also in painter the erasor on the wacom pen can be used as any brush, unlike photoshop which only lets you use it as a erasor. |

i agree with most of you. i like photoshop better. i've used photoshop 6, 7, CS, and CS2. all great apps.... and i have painter 7. very good program, but once i figure out all the shortcuts, photoshop will be my buddy. hehe
Chris, i hate that eraser thing too. it's so lame in photoshop, i never use it anymore. haha, i just hit the (E) key. |

Hi Chris:
Painter does have simplified HSV slider-based color selection tools.
Open the Color Info palette to access them. You can optionally drag this palette into your primary palette stack and either replace or augment the Color Wheel.
