Ive just started in an art school and half of the time the teachers wants us to sketch (havent started painting yet) in big scale. in A1 or 1*1.3 meters
Im having a hard time adopting to this. Earlier when I've done croquis I've done it in the same scale as I see, not scaled it up from what the eye percive. And then I've gotten into a certain flow after 15 minutes when everything turns out right, but to get this flow in a bigger scale is hard for me. It helps alot when i back of and sketch from maybe 1.5 meters distance but it's still harder. Whats your experience with this? will it get easier? it's very tuff to see your sketches loking much worse than you are capable of right now... |

After a couple of weeks of struggling it finally became almost as easy to sketch big as it is to sketch small, I had a breaktrough today.
I can now recommend for all of you who only work small to give big paintings/charcoal a try. Because the end result is a helluva lot bigger |

hell yeah, bigger is always better... or at least more fun to do.
atmosphere and size of the canvas enhance the creation process |

I think that one reason sketching larger is encouraged is that this forces the artist to use the the full motion range of the arm. Sketching small is mostly accomplished by wrist motion. Using the entire muscle set of the arm provides a potentially greater range of expression in the strokes created.
