I'm not a fan of PC or console RPG usually, since I feel it was a misguided idea in the first place to build on the paper/dice RPG formula. I'm also not a fan of RTS, since it brings back memories of when I worked as a sales person in the past, juggling 5 customers at once, trying to restock an entire shelf of products, and answer non-stop phone rings from angry customers. Muti-tasking is NOT fun for me.
But, I have to say, Dungeon Siege is the first RPG game I've ever felt I truely liked. I've played a little of Planescape: Torment, Diablo II, Icewind Dale...etc, and I like this much more.
I think the nice graphics really sold me first of all. It's just SO FUCKING COOL to be able to have true 3D instead of that fixed isometric view crap. It's far more immersive when you can actually run around in a 3D enviroment. It's even cooler that you can zoom all the way in to be INSIDE your enviroment like a 3rd person game.
The item management I liked immediately. The UI design is clean, simple, and fast to use. No unnecessary crap.
The music is awesome.
The customization of your characters is a lot more visible, unlike Icewind Dale, where your characters don't look that different from each other.
The only thing I don't like is that the characters don't have personalities. They don't interact. They show no emotions at all. Strangely enough, it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, since I'm so immersed in exploring the terrain, managing the combat tatics, managing the items...etc.
I hope there will be a sequel, with more character personality, and incorporate some adventure game elements too. |

I agree that the graphics are excellent(even though it's struggling on my computer) and the musical score was very inspirational(at least for me) but still, this game is too straight forward for me. What I loved about Baldur's Gate was the character interactions(as you mentioned) and especially the love interests between party members(Yup, my fighter, Parn, was wildly in love with the elf, who you meet early in the game, in BGII.)
Personally I just can't wait until Neverwinter Nights comes out, then you will have some real rpg sweetness |

Reading Previews about the "Hope of Computer-RPGs" made me think itll be a great game, with much rpg-stuff. Like Baldurs Gate, but with great graphics and in a not-D&D Environment.
BUT, when I downloaded the demo and started playing I thought "hell where is the fuckin rpg?". Not that its a bad game, but its even alot simpler as some of the oldest rpgs Ive played. Its nothing more then Diablo - and that doesnt count as RPG for me - just that it is in 3d. All you do is run around and kill. 3, yes whole 3 Attributes are there and you cant even customize them from the beginning. Your Character is once again a fuckin no-name guy (even worse a farmer!) who becomes the Hero of the day.
I dont know the full games content, but if its as linear and unpersonal as the demo I most probably wont buy it as I wouldnt play it to the end anyways. Its fun for a while but all the player does is klick on enemies. Im sure alot of people will love it, but I dont think that any RPG-gamer will really like it. Most will probably feel insulted that it is even labeled RPG.
OK, enough ranting about it, but I just was SO disappointed about how the game turned out to be.
I knew why I better pre-ordered another game instead of going out and buy Dungeon Siege.
The Elder Scrolls III - Morrowind will be THE Computer-RPG. I think Bethesda learned alot from their former games like Daggerfall, etc... and now they have a winner on their hand. It has great graphics (even pixelshaded water - yess! ), it has a HUGE world, the best character generation system youve ever seen and the greatest interactivity. You can kill everyone in the game except 1 person and still finish the game afaik. I SO dont want to wait till 7th of may + shipping time, but the collectors edition will be worth the shipping-waiting time for sure, as it has soundtrack, art-of-morrowind-book and a tin figure
ok, I shut up now |

Lunatique: I guess RPGs are really not your thing. You probably like DS because it is actually not an RPG, but rather an action game. It is even going futher in this direction than Diablo.
It has no story, and you are very limited in yor actions. Exploring the environment is actually not true cos there is just one way that you can go.
Still it seems to make fun for a lot of people. The large amount of items was what I liked most.
I personally stopped playing it at the tent camp, cos it was also for me way to
straight forward. Even the actual fighting was way too automatized for my taste.
I think for people who look for a game with a lot of hack and slash its a great game, but real RPG fans will be very disapointed (although, even for them the hack and slash can be fun).
But I really dont understand why they call it an RPG. Thats what it is for sure not. |

give morrowind a try...it is simply amazing, never seen anything like it. Dungeon Siege just got old after a while, it was just clicking all the time.. Morrowind is much much better |

Well, I love a good story too, but I find that adventure games have better stories than the typical RPG. In fact, adventure games is ALL about story. One of my favorites was The Longest Journey. |

Lunatique: I heard a lot of good things about the longest journey, isn't it sorta like a final fantasy game with a more mature plot?
Dungeon siege was allright, I was expecting a bit more than what it was. I got fed up with the single player game because it was too linear for me. So I ran around in the multiplayer world which is much less linear and more fun to kill stuff in. It's a shame you can't use packmules in multiplayer.
I'm having a lot more fun in Morrowind right now though (See the morrowind thread heh heh) because it's up to you to do what you want. I guess it really depends on the mood the player is in...if you want more of a hardcore RPG experience morowind is perfect, if you want a hack-n-slash that isn't hard to get into (and out of!) Dungeon siege and others like it are perfect...I'm hoping some people plan to make some really fun mods for dungeon siege... |

I agree, I love that game, dungeon siege I mean. Though I too think it's a brainless RPG where all you gotta do is hacking monsters with no strategy involved (but same goes for diablo) but this time I think it's fun, because of the great graphics, sound and story. I play it online now and really enjoy it. and I'm really not a RPG fan to begin with.
But, if you really want to try out a RPG game with great graphics, personality and awesome changes on the character you control when getting new stuff, excellent effects and not least good/ok rpg-strategy with monsters where you actually have to think a bit before start the slashing. play Dark Alliance on Playstation 2
atleast that's what I think...but play it 2 player that's more fun. |

Mentioning Dark Alliance on PS2 - too bad that its a console game only. I watched 2 preview videos and its looking so damn awesome!
It looks like alot hack'n'slash too, but with alot more Zazing! behind it then Dungeon Siege.
