Found an interesting collection of legal tender from the 1930's and before. The scans are all high-quality and the listing seems to be pretty comprehensive.

Of special note is the $100,000 (!) bill, Allied currency for use in Europe and Japan, and Condederate currency (complete with "Confederate States of America" printed prominently across the bill).

What's probably most fascinating is the level of artistry and experimentation that went into old money. The renderings are almost photographic and the graphic patterns are brilliantly complex.

Moreover, looking through my wallet now, I can confidently say that money today IS BORING AND SUCKS ASS.

I guess the complexity and high quality of worksmanship were intended to make the bills harder to counterfeit. Nowadays they use other techniques - holograms, magnetic strips, watermarks... I don't even know what.
