Up till now I've used Corel Painter Essentials 2, Nothing compared to Painter IX, a gift to me.

However I can't get it to start. It displays an error message telling me it was unable to initialize the brush engine. I checked the Readme and found no troubleshooting guide, and my mac should be good enough to run it.

It's a powerbook,
G4
Mac OS 10.2.8
500 Mhz
512 Mb of RAM
I'm running 1142x768 resolution, but it didn't help when i changed it to 1024x768.

I can post the log when I tried to start it if it would help anybody help me figure out what's wrong, it'd be a real shame if I couldn't get this to work.

If you have the original CD-key or Registration Key, then uninstall the software. Re download it (or re install from CD), re-install it and use your current cd key.

Oh and back up all your files.
Just my .05 cents. ...hey my .02 cents grew interest Rolling Eyes

It cost more to order it from in the box, so I got it, or more accurately, the person who got it for me ordered it the online way, so I doubt that that would be a wise thing to do...

Edit: Mad clumsy me, I'll see if that helps anything, thanks.

You should still have a license code that will let you re-install.

unfortunately reinstalling proved ineffective. for some reason even the Corel email tech support couldn't connect, or we couldn't connect to it via email. It said the server was unavaliable.

i can post of log of what happened when I tried to open Painter IX if it would help at all, if anyone else has any other suggestions I'd appreciate it.

Hi,

One more thing you can try is to reset Painter IX to its default state (as it was when installed).

Before doing that, move any files you created into another folder somewhere so you'll be able to restore them later (custom settings/preferences, custom brush variants, custom brush libraries, brush categories, etc.)

You'll find your custom files and folders in the Painter IX User folder, located here:

Mac - /Users/[User Name]/Library/Application Support/Corel/Painter IX/

Windows - Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Corel\Painter IX

Then hold down the Shift key while launching Painter IX.

If that doesn't do the trick, post your message, including all details to the following Corel Painter newsgroup:

Add Server: cnews.corel.com

Subscribe to:

c.PainterIX

Good luck!

Painter IX is already in it's default state, It hasn't started properly once, so I have no custom brushes or settings.

edit: when it didn't start contacting corel also failed, it said my comp couldn't connect to send their line an email because their server was down.

Hi Sampster,

How frustrating!

Maybe the solution mentioned in this thread at Conceptart.org will help:

Ahhh... here's the problem.

It's in the first three lines of your post.

"It's a powerbook,
G4
Mac
OS 10.2.8
500 Mhz
512 Mb of RAM
I'm running 1142x768 resolution, but it didn't help when i changed it to 1024x768."

...and you might want to try the
version that's not bootlegged.

Macs are generally reliable machines; and my computer more than meets the system requirements for Macs. It needs at least a G3 with 500 mhz, and I'm using a G4 with 500 mhz. It needs 128 mb of ram (256 recommended), and the comp I'm using has 512. It also needs Mac OS 10.2.8 or later, and I'm running 10.2.8 right now. I have a tablet, more than the needed resolution, and more than enough memory; so it's not my computers fault, it's a software conflict. Furthermore, if you're trying to imply that I got painter IX by means of theft you might as well leave. Take your condescending attitude and BS somewhere else.

My dad got painter IX for me as a gift (when it was hugely discounted in a sale). I've got serial numbers and installation codes to prove it, and if you called Corel, and happened to know my phone number and name to make sure the version isn't bootlegged they'll check for your serial number (because I called this morning), and it's in their database. After emailing their tech support they sent a CD version of Painter IX (with the same serial number so they could be sure I would use it on multiple machines or give it to a friend).

Anyway in an update of my tale of woe, I reinstalled Painter IX from the CD and it still failed to initialize the brush engine. Dear old Dad has kindly volunteered to email Corel tech support again, since I loathe the idea of paying the $25 phone line tech support fee when it's their product that's not working (and when their website said customer service was toll free...I expected the actual service to to be free of charge, not just their automated messaging system).

Edit: doing the whole "shift key" thing didn't help, since Painter IX has never started in the first place everything is in it's default state anyway, so I wasn't surprised when it didn't work.
I do have Corel Painter Essentials 2, that's what I do stuff on right now (it came with my tablet). Do you think any of it's brush files could be conflicting with Painter IX's?
