In some ways the 2nd pic is better than the 3rd, the motion of the rotor is more alive. I guess it's the way the environment reacts more to the movement, if you see what I mean. |

I understand what you're saying. I had to turn off some overlaying layers to focus on the figure. They'll be back |

Nearly done with the figure, just have his mp40. Then I can continue on the surroundings, color, and any hard casting shadows I left off the figure.

update
Finished the gun. Although it still looks like crap, that stupid mp40 was the hardest thing I've ever painted. Never ever painting another one.

beautiful work!
it's so damn detailed that it looks like a 3d render in b&w.
now, ab out what the other's said... there was a feeling of lots of motion in the second pic. if you can bring that back into the final thing, it would be awesome.
beautiful work so far though _________________ http://www.annisnaeem.blogspot.com/ |

A very very basic color overlay just for the sake of updating. The background colors where just thrown in, nothing final there.

Question, are you just painting color behind the black and white layer there? Because I remember I tried that once, and it didn't look right. Yours seems to look pretty good though. |

I believe this is one of those pieces that will look a lot better in b&w, maybe u could go for that very unsaturated look?
There are some things that doesn't match up with that castshadow from the weapon, in that 4th sketch it seems to me he is holding the weapon to the left side of the leg ruling out a castshadow.
Depends on small differences I guess but to me it looked better without the castshadow.
Hmm not sure you wanna have critique at this point, neither would an overpaint help I believe.
oh well

Mega muffin, I'm painting directly onto the gray layers. If you change the mode of your brush to color, it works similar to how a highlighter does on black and white print. Also you'll want to select the layer transparency first, which might have been your problem.
Thanks Mathew, I'll take both of those into consideration. |

Alright
For the most part it's done, but I bet the client will want patches on his uniform after he sees it.
Thanks for everyone's support and advice. Also if you still see things that you think might need work done, let me know.

Ok, I'm trying something with his left arm/gun. I didn't realize how badly proportion it was until just now, so I did a quick distortion on it. Do you guys think it works better before or after the distortion? I probably won't be able to get away with just resizing his forearm, I'll bet the upper arm and gun barrel will need to be altered some as well. But this change should give you enough to make a call.

The bigger hand looks more in purportion to his knee. I like that one better. The other one looks like he has a withered hand.
Nice effing rendering by the way. This is great. I'd like to see at least a hint of his left foot (our right) behind all that dust though. As it is now it just sorta looks like his toes are missing. Espectially with the exagerated perspective. I would think you should see a toe. _________________ The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new

Great work Seth1, I like!
I feel as though the character needs a badge or something to represent him; for instance, something on his left arm. Awesome stuff once again! _________________ Why dont you clone yourself!

I have the gun and arm changed now. I also tried out seth1's trick, without as much success as him.

Hey, that's shaping right up, G-Gnome.
All of the grass blades are done at the same width right now . . . it might be a good idea to have a few that are painted with a broader brush to suggest being closer to the camera.
Also, and this may be something you've done already, but have you had a look at the piece flipped horizontally? It makes it easier to see when you've got an error in perspective or proportion. Might help you sort out any remaining issues on your own if you haven't seen it mirrored yet.
Can't wait for the book. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

Okay, I've run out of time to work on this but I believe it's finished anyways. There's probably still some little problems here and there, but oh well I'm happy and so is the client. Kind of pisses me off when I miss such glaring problems all the way from the initial sketch. Makes me feel like such an idiot.
Thanks for everyone's help and motivation.
