Hi all. I got a first show of commercial interest - just a civilian as it seems but this made me wonder how to deal with digital paintings that one "sells"? Should there be a contract that I would sign forbidding me to show this digital work anywhere else? What is the best way of approach?

Sincerely /D

This topic is really hard, I tried to find an approach myself, but not alot came out of my research.

I dont know how good you know that civilian or what the situation is, but maybe you can find out more if you actually ask that person about his feelings. Maybe he doesnt care and just wants a nice print, or maybe he does care and he wants a certificate of autenticity with it that says its a limited edition of one piece.

Sorry that I cant give any real help.

Treat your digital prints as limited edition prints.

Include the file on a signed CD-ROM diskalong with the print.

Hand sign and date the print as an unlimited print.

As gLitterbug wrote, it's a hard topic... an evolving topic. I suspect the most successful digital print sales have simply been low priced unlimited edition glicee prints.

I wouldn't include the file on a CD for one of many prints of an image, as that can then be printed and copied and sold on e-bay in full resolution.
If it is sold as a "limited edition," you do not need to include the file.

Now, if you sell it as a "Digital Original," you charge quite a bit more, and then you include the digital file...

Here's a pretty good article about giclee prints, and selling art prints in general: http://painting.about.com/cs/printing/a/gilceeprints.htm
