Hey folks, thanks for looking. I'm not new here or anything, but I haven't posted in a while. I'm really not great at art, but I want to be. This thing is actually kind of finished except it's not very good so I'm posting it in WIP. I'm willing to work on it some more if you all can point out major flaws and things. I really want to learn.
Honestly I am kind of proud of this because it is the first thing I've drawn on the computer that is from life. I've tried before but always got frustrated, and so this is kind of a milestone. And now I'm pumped to do more from life, which I know is the best way to learn. And, I mean, I've been doing art for a few years now but haven't been able to come up with cool stuff on the comp (except drawing from photos), and it was just cool to see how much stuff I knew. Like sometimes I would just be paiting and then look at it and be like, "Wow how did I do that?" lol.
Anyway, here it is. Some parts are obviously more sketchy than others, but if you see some glaring things, please let me know. It may look like more of a speed paint, but it took me a few hours, lol. Thanks!

Hey there. Nice picture your working on, tis very good I would say! As for sugestions, well I'm pretty new to digital myself but I would say that it would be even greater if you continued working on it, putting in darker shades and so on. Must say there is something about that figure that fascinates me and got to love the look in his eyes too! please show us more! _________________ There is no spoon. So use a fork! |

Hey thanks for the comments, johanng. Funny that you mentioned the eyes because that was actually the one part I changed about the figure. In real life the eyes look very strange, and I figured that if I painted them that way it would come off as a fault of mine that they looked so funny, lol. Yarik, I was a bit perplexed by your comment. Sorry if I'm missing something, lol.
Anyway, I decided to start a new pic. I remembered that the figure had a gun, so I added that and switched up the pose. Here's what I have so far. I'll work on it more tomorrow when I have time.

Here's what I did today. Basically worked on the face and some on the gun and hand.

Today's bit o' progress. I kinda crapped up the tail, lol. Worked on that other arm and hand, added a blocked in belt thing, and defined more of the teeth and jaw.

When working on a picture like this, do you paint with transparent pixels locked? |

seth, sorry, I don't know what that means to have transparent pixels locked. It could just be a matter of not knowing the jargon on my part. It could also be that I use Photoshop Elements.
Here's a bit of an update. I'm having a hard time with the pants...they are kind of shiney and I can't tell how bright the shine parts are. It all seems so subtle, yet it looks cool on the figure...tail and gun are also giving me problems. Still, this is really good practice. Maybe after this I'll pull out a diff figure and give it another go.

Started a new drawing today. This one is like....alot more complicated. Today I just blocked things out. I'll need to tweak it for sure while I'm going, but I think the overall proportions are good enough to go ahead. There are a few different textures, too, so that'll be a challange. Haha, wish me luck.

I haven't been updating, but that doesn't mean I haven't been drawing. I've been on like an art binge ever since school started. I'm doing almost twice as much art out of class than in it....it's crazy.
So I never did finish that orc...I started putting in shading and it looked really crappy so I guess I lost interest. Since then I've done some self portraits (most of which are in that self-portrait thread) and now I'm just drawing stuff that I have laying around. Namely, crazybones. And I drew my shoe the other day too because I just got it and it's very toight.
So I'll just go ahead and post some updates here. The first one took me less than an hour and the shoe probably took more like 2 hours. I'm not even gonna post my three earliest attempts at crazy bone drawing, because they pretty much suck, lol.
Feedback is totally welcome, esp any tips on making a background because every time I try and add one it looks bad. Thanks for looking!
Oh, one last thing. The other pics in this thread aren't showing up because I was using an image host that I guess isn't around anymore... I probably won't fix it unless anyone wants me to...

Well, I just finished this..err, actually maybe not. But I was working on it and decided to apply a filter, and I was like "hey, that's sweet!!!" so I kind of stopped.
Here is the origional:
And here is the filtered one:
See, i know it's cheap to apply filters. I know it's cheating. It's not really art, yeah. I don't tend to, but I just was feeling so "blah" with this one and filters are cool, so I tried one spur of the moment, and liked it. It's for a friend, anyway, and the cooler it looks, the better. So I've got the practise drawing and a cool pic all at the same time....neat, lol.
I used a photo ref. for the kid and the parrot, but the kid didn't have an eyepatch or a coat like that, and I basically just used the parrot pic for the head and general body shape.
I'd appreciate comments! I might still work on this one, but for now I'm content.[/img] |

Hey folks, haven't updated here in a while. Well I'm busy at work on my AP portfolio. I chose a chair as my concentration. I just think that alot can be done with it. I am rethinking now though, lol. Idk. If you have any comments about this work, please post them as I love unbiased, sincere opinions. The photographic quality isn't great, but you can get the gist.
I was going for a bit of surrealism with the chair to make it more alive. That's why the top part is oversized and a bit warped.
So here's the deal. I'm gonna work really hard at this and JUST MAYBE I can get a 5. I get discouraged looking at the work on collegeboard.com, because it's just so damn good and mine doesn't even compare, especially since I can't use my media of choice (CGI.) However, in the long run I'm not concerned about what my AP grade is. That doesn't define my worth any more than school grades do. I mean sure I'm being hard on myself, but just so you don't get the impression that I think I suck--I don't. (I mean, I kind of do, but I dont' look at it that way. I'm improving. ) I just think that I will have a hard time competing on this portfolio task.
It's charcoal, 11x13.
