I can't believe this is the game the Digital Extreme made and hyped. I don't even care that it's completely derivative--it's just...lifeless. The enemy dialogues while during combat are repeated over and over and over, and that's one of my pet peeves. It's one of the those lazy design crap that jerks you out of the game and reminds you that there was middle-school level creativity behind the making of the game. Just how many enemies can you encounter that can say the exact same threats and insults to you? For a game made in today's advanced gaming climate, it's just unforgivable (why isnt unforgivable a word in the dictionary?).
The game's pacing is also horrible. There's no immersion at all--it's just a set with some stuff for you to shoot and you have to go from one location to the next. The "story" is like an excuse for you to have stuff to shoot at. Why bother with a single player game if you're going to half-ass it? Why not just make a multiplayer game? I'm sick and tired of the game industry's lack of respect and understanding of what good writing can do for games.
If the gameplay itself was fun, then I'd have been more forgiving in my criticism, but holy Christ can we say "ripoff" and "unoriginal"? There's not a single original idea in the game, and to make it worse, the weapons and the AI are some of the most bland and boring ones I've ever had the displeasure of encountering. The multiplayer is also pretty lame. It gives you nothing new or different to experience. If you have played other sci-fi FPS multiplayer games, you wouldn't miss a thing if you never played Pariah. I can't believe people actually make games like this today. This is what happens when you have good 3D artists, programmers..etc, but NO DESIGN TALENT.
This POS is getting uninstalled. I'm trying Project Snowblind next. Hope that's better (at least it got much better reviews across the board).
Edit: I just tried Project Snowblind, and holy shit that kicked a lot of ass. I can't believe Crystal Dynamics made it (never was a fan of Crystal in general). It's SO MUCH better than Pariah. The pacing is exciting, the writing is great, the presentation is much more interesting. There's actually a brain behind the conception of the game, which is not something I could say for Pariah.

Hahahah. Sorry for my laughing, but youre like my friend. He pre-ordered it due to the hype and then BOOM the shitbomb dropped on him. I nearly ordered it too, but then I checked the web for reviews and thank god I did. Thought Id give my friends copy a run since he didnt play it anymore and I didnt even get beyond the first level until uninstall. The whole game really feels like a joke. Big plans turned to crap. I really am disappointed that the creators of the original Unreal couldntdo anything better than this. No matter if the deadline came and the game got rushed, some more months wouldnthave helped it either I guess. |

i cant stand fps anymore... they are all exactly the same. Just mind numbing. And what gets me even more is that there is always demand! People play them. All you need is hype.
The exception being Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butchers Bay. Its short, but almost everything in it is a memorable moment. Try it, you've no idea what you are in for. All characters have unique face and voice. All have unique dialogue. Some moments i ended up replaying because they were just too cool. Like ring fights, and piloting the mech. Rivals HL2, gameplay wise, but since there was no hype no one heard of it.
Just thinking of it makes me want to reinstall it. Such smooth progression through the story. So immersive. _________________ "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity" - Sigmund Freud |

Ill probably get me Riddick, its already in the bargain bin for 10 euros and since I got a better graphics card now it should run ok.
Sadly youre right about the hype, it got great reviews everywhere, but the publisher didnt do much for getting the word out. What amazes me is that it seems that most people dont really read reviews or check what games come out, but rather wait for some advertising slap into their face and scream BUY ME I ROXXORS.
Same happened with Project Snowblind, it went to the bargain bin even sooner. I guess most people not even heard about it. I was skeptic, but I might get that one too. I read some reviews which say its pretty much a Deus Ex with the main point on action. (talking about deus ex 1 btw, 2 was not really BAD, but very disappointing if you played part 1. Which also is why Im a bit "hateful" about consoles, because they made developers dumb down games like Deus Ex 2 so the audience is bigger).
Even another game I should probably get me is Beyond Good and Evil. Anyone played that? Its said to be really good, but it totally bombed in sales. Just like Prince of Persia Sands of Time. Both also got great reviews, but could be bought for cheap soon after release. I wonder if making the sequel of Prince of Persia all dark and mean helped selling it. But I guess so since Part 3 will be even meaner and darker. |

I've played Riddick (and finished it), and Beyond Good and Evil (didn't finish it).
I never play a game to the end unless I like it enough, so that means I liked Riddick. However, I didn't feel it lived up to the reviews I read. It was entertaining, but nothing about it really screamed "put me on your top 10 list!" Vin Diesel's voice acting in it had about as much life as a leftover cold steak, regardless of the fact he's supposed to be some cold-blooded badass. He had ONE monotoned voice, without ANY hint of emotion or change of volume, intonation, timbre, or speed whatsoever. The baddassedness is just too far stretched. They made him into a guy acts as if he wouldn't bat an eyelash even in front of God or the devil himself. Whatever.
Beyond Good and Evil had great art direction and creative direction, with a believable and immersive world, including fun characters. However, the gameply is just not my cup of tea (the platformer aspect of it). If it was just a straight adventure game without the platformer aspect, I'd have played it through to the end. |

Pariah is shit. Plain and simple, the demos told me enough to not even think about getting it. _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

I just finished Riddick and I have to say apart from some annoying parts where I didnt know what to do or overlooked something, it was very very nice.
This game shouldve gotten the hype that doom 3 had. |
