Pardon the mispelled topic title - I'm a buzzing birthday boy.
-------------------------------
"SAN FRANCISCO -- Steve Jobs confirmed weeks of hard-to-believe rumors Monday, saying that Apple Computer will end its 11-year partnership with IBM and adopt a new generation of microprocessors from Intel.
Before a rapt, standing-room-only audience at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, the company's CEO confirmed speculation that began with published reports last month and which many observers had considered unlikely.
"Yes, it's true," Jobs said. "We are transitioning from PowerPC to Intel processors."
The transition to Intel will take two years. Jobs said Apple will be shipping Intel-powered Macs in mid-2006, with higher-end machines following a year later."

HA!!!!!! I've know they'd do that ever since they announced that MacOs would use a Linux kernel. 'Bout time! I'd love a XP/Mac dual boot!
And, happy B-day, Gort! |

(So I can have accurate facts) Did that change at some point? I distinctly remember that Apple made a big fuss about Linux pre-OSX.
Just wonderin'. |

Do you think this will mean OS X will install on our current XP running machines?
I'm doubtful. That would mean Apple will be ditching their hardware sales.
I woulden't be suprized if their Intel CPUs will use an intirely different architecture than the i386.
But if it does, then hey, bring it on ^^ |

well as intel are going 64Bit and with apple bringing new machines out with their own Motherboard any how i don't see a problem with them switching ... IBM were just helping them out when Motarolla decided to pull the plug on PowerPC chips..
Jimmy alot of people thought that OS-X was just a Linux clone.. its never been linux and always NeXT and BSD..
this straight from Apple

UNIX-based
From a rock-solid, developer-friendly UNIX foundation to grid computing, powerful technologies drive Mac OS X Tiger to its leadership role as the worlds most advanced operating system.
Beneath the easy-to-use interface and rich graphics of Mac OS X lies Darwin, an open source, UNIX-based foundation built on such technologies as mach and FreeBSD. With Tiger come significant enhancements to this UNIX foundation, including improvements to dual-processor support for increased performance when reading and writing files to disk and when using Mac OS X with NFS file servers. |

Apple: "Yeah, so...in this graphic here taken from our Apple performance page, you can clearly see that the Macintosh is over DOUBLE the performance of the fastest pentium 4 chip available at the time of testing. Well... Guess what? We're no longer using the PowerPC shit and switching to that slow-ass one Pentium 4 shit on the very bottom of the list. But guess what? We're not gonna update our benchmark page to reflect this and even if we do modify the page it will always say our computers are better."
The PowerPC G5 out-shoots the Pentium 4 in a battery of tests. But its in the rough-and-tumble of real-world performance that the G5 really shines shredding the PCs reputation in the process. they say. HA HA.
Right. |
