Hi there,

there's something i noticed looking at some of Craig's Final fantasy work, when i matched it with the shots in the film. why is it that both images are slightly different? my best bet would be that some color changes were done to make the image blend in with the movie a little more. but some parts almost seem rendered in 3d.
this is the image i'm aiming for

i would include the shot for the movie, but you guys probably know what i'm talking about...

Often times matte paintings are projected onto simple geometry in a 3D program so that the director can add a camera move to the scene. And yes, the color would usually be tweaked by the person compositing the shot, both to make it work in the context of foreground elements, and to make it consistent with the shots appearing before and after it.

To make things even crazier I've had to color correct matte paintings myself. Just depends on what's needed. Also, that scene could be adjusted in digital intermediate.

sometimes mattes are very much changed, take LotR for example, that blue Dusso painting of Rivendell was tweaked to sepia and reused in Return of the King. In RotK, the Grey Havens matte went through major changes between theatre version and DVD one. It happens every time I guess, glad we can see the paintings in internet too Very Happy
