A line from the Jodi Foster Movie Contact sums it up.

"If there isnt other life out there, seems like an aweful waste of space."

wow!
im glad i started off the topic. im also glad that we have a huge intelligent discussion going on here and im trying to catch up with it all since i've been away.
very nice theories guys. i personally would like to believe that there is life out there, even if it turns out to be hostile. knowing the fact that there is a huge possibility lets me sleep better at night. i mean, did God create a huge playground for us worthless humans to play on? I think there's more out there.

However, i'm a religious guy and religion bashes the thoery apart. If there was a Jesus, Noah, Moses, Mohammad and all those guys, they would have to exist in those worlds and be the SAME guys. If there were others, then it crushes the worlds beliefs...
I lost my point. Had it in my head but can't word it anymore

great feedback so far. Thanks everyone for replying. Lets keep it going Very Happy

well it could never be proven...but what if an alien race artificially impregnated virgin mary?

I mean in today's medical procedures this can be done very easily. Could knock a woman out, impregnate her and she could be a virgin (technically).

no, she wasn't a virgin, its a bad translation, so your aliens could do it the traditional way.

i don't know but to me it seems like most people here are just stating their beliefs. So no comment on that.

Ragnarok- Like I said, the values were only figurative. You can plug in whatever numbers you want, you're pretty much guaranteed to find an affirmative result (which, of course, undermines the credibility of Drake's Equation). The raw math of the entire universe alone proves that intelligent life exists SOMEWHERE out there, if only because we do.

About God as an alien? This is all heavy dogmatic stuff. On one hand, believing that God exists on faith alone kind of dictates that you have to accept any and all unproven assumptions about such a deity, including that he's an alien, or a dog, or a talking aloe vera plant. Blasphemous as it may be, this is still how dogma works. On the other hand, it's silly to try and explain one faith-driven construction (god) with another one (invading aliens) simply because one is more entertaining than the other.

Really, we're all dodging the big question here: Where are all the space babes, and when can I expect to teach them how to love, Earthling-style?

I've heard this reasoning before but I've never really understood it. Someone explain it to me. Why would they have to be the same guys?

And I'm having trouble seeing how alien life would contradict the bible or quran in more ways than say, "earth is not the center of the universe" would. Does The Bible claim that god created us and only us?

I know Islam at least supports the idea of alien life. I found this. "And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the living creatures He has scattered through them." (42.29) And: "The seven heavens and the earth, and beings therein, declare his glory."

Sounds good to me Wink

Diruo> to understand what i said, you have to pretend to believe in god and his existence, prophets, etc. if u dont already. the thing is, if god DOES exist, and what is written in the bible, quran, torah, and all of the sacred books IS true, then the 'aliens' should have had no major prophet or savior. because if they did have a 'major' prophet/savior, and they believe that their prophet/savior is God or the 'chief of all prophets', then it would totally undermine all of the world's beliefs. today's prominent religions, such as Islam and Christianity believe in what i said above (islam- mohammad is chief of all prophets, christianity-jesus is son of god, heir to the throne). Thus, to keep our beliefs and the other peoples beliefs in balance, the guys that we follow would have had to be the same guys they follow. get me? these prophets/saviors should have existed so that they existed here in our world and their world in the same bodies; if not, then it totally knocks what we believe in today off its feet.

hope i was clear enough. sorry if some sentences are confusing; wrote this in a hurry.
Very Happy great feedback guys!

I think that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe, but that humans (as we define ourselves today) will never meet or interact with it. The distances and time frames involved in interstellar contact are too great for our fragile, Earth-centric bodies. We will have to design our own replacements, be they biological, mechanical, or some mixture of both, and those post-humans will be the first to make contact, by virtue of an ability to sleep for a million years and wake refreshed.

Any aliens that made it to Earth would be similar vessels. Extensions of their long-extinct designers.

Unless they figured out wormholes. Or time machines... that could be used to traverse space. Anyway... all the answers lie here.

Are you trying to be funny Drunken Monkey? It seems to be kind of intriguing, but I dont get the whole site with WORDS LIKE THIS. He doesn't seem to be coherent.

Edit: Ok, nvm, this guy is nuts.
He spouts out into random directions. he talks about his time theory and all of a sudden he is talking about the NAACP and how it is racists.

Annisahmad, I'm trying really hard here but I'm afraid I still don't get it. Firstly, I don't understand why they would have to have a savior/prophet in the first place. The prophets of earth have (allegedly) been created to deal with certain issues and situations specific to earth.. and I'm sure that on another planets there would be a whole other set of issues to deal with.

I guess it's this I don't get. Balance? We believe these people existed, yes, but isn't it enough that they existed here? It seems to me that the profets were sent down to the people of earth.. there is no mention of them being the saviours of all beings in the universe, is there?

I STILL DON'T GET IT! Embarassed

Edit:
Sumaleth, I'm reminded by another moment in Contact where one guy says "We don't even know if they believe in God!" and he suggests that we should find out their church-going habits before meeting them. No offense to the christians, but I laughed so hard I sprained an abdominal muscle Very Happy

Diru:

Yes, Contact was a very clever novel/movie.

Contact aside:

There's a part in Contact (might be just the novel, not the film) where the alien tells them that way, way, way, way, waaaaaaaaaay down in the decimal places of PI they found a perfect circle, formed by a huge array of 1s and 0s. The aliens seem to take this as a hint that God might exist.

Of course, PI has an infinite number of decimal places so if you calculate down far enough you have to assume that you'll eventually find a perfect ASCII representation of the Mona Lisa. That's the nature of infinite. Smile

Annisahmad:

I don't really get what Diruo asked you either. Like, why would aliens believing in their own version of God undermine an individual belief system on Earth, when all the belief systems on Earth already clash with each other?

As long as we don't know if the universe is infinite (which we simply don't know, and never will) we have to accept the posibility that it is. This however means that there ia an endless amount of beings out there.

The most distant objects we can see -- and therefore the oldest -- look like very early proto-galaxies. If the universe was infinite then we wouldn't expect to see the age tapering off with distance/time like that. So that's a fairly good indication that the universe isn't infinite.

I remember some other arguements in favor of a finite universe involving red-shift but I don't remember how they went.

Followup:

You were right here. I've been reading about it and there really is no strong evidence towards either a finite or infinite universe. Just for the record. Smile

Hehe, I am glad about this. Thanks for acknowledging it to be true Very Happy
I didn't read anything about it though. It's simply logically. As long as we aren't at THE END we don't know if there is an end or not.
I though think that the chances that the universe is infinite are pretty high.
What is the End? Whats after the end? Nothing? Can't imagine. It's easier to imagine that it goes on and on forever.

As for there being human form of aliens on earth from outer space, I doubt it, but it may be possible. I'm more into the belief that bacteria and other specimens from outer space may reside here.

oh Diruo,
in response to my other explanation that u said u did not get;

pretend that god exists if you do not already believe in him, and pretend that all of the monotheistic religions such as christianity, islam, and the jewish are true. then, here comes the explanation;

the thing is that in the bible, jesus was the savior and is the son of god. he has achieved universal status. no one is above him since he is heir to the throne.

in islam, muhammad is the prophet, who is the chief of all prophets. he has also achieved universal status.

now what i'm saying is, if these 'aliens' had such saviors, and believe in one god, AND their religions are 'true', their saviors could not be higher than ours. for if they are said to be, it undermines all monotheistic religions, and nothing makes sense.

i guess my explanation is pretty confusing... sorry. Smile
