There are many pictures in here that I am thinking of using for the portfolio. Sorry for making your Intarwebs cry!!!1!!!Elleven!

These are the pieces I'm thinking of using in my portfolio to submit to Art Center and RMCAD to get into the Illustration programs. I am told that I should be making this strongly figurative to cater to the programs so that is what I'm doing.

Not pictured are a few images I've done for school, one a clothed male figure (in Arabian/Genie attire!) and a female figure. The male is pure oil pastels, the female is an acrylic wash with oil pastels under.

Mirror Dress: This is in the process of being reworked, I'm completely redo'ing the dress, I might touch up the bg a tiny bit. (lots of refs)

Nami portrait, I'm going to rework the background, I don't think it compliments the image with the colors in it now. I might play around with some textures back there. (ref)

Katsucon Cover pic (Current feedback suggests I should either redo the face more realistically, or just totally scrap it from portfolio, open to other suggestsions here too) (ref)

Slide of this Sargent Reproduction to demonstrate ability to paint with Oils.

Ominous: Going to rework the forms in here, make them more solid aand use this to demonstrate more landscape/environmental stuff, cheifly to show versatility. (no ref)

Think I should put both of these in there, they are 24x30's, so I'll do slides (from my own photos)
Victoria Tube Station on Circle and Richmond

Batarang + Technolust still life:

The moleskine book I travel with for observational drawings such as these two (all from life)

Considering using this picture, not positive, I like the style and colors, from ref

Would this be worth finishing up to add in, or should I devote the time that would take to doing something completely from skratch? From Ref.
Natalie

Same situation here
Color Study Girl

Should I include these pages for figure stuff or not?
Meg (ref)

Lohan (Would fix the hair) (ref)

B (ref)

Quickpose 2: (ref)

Quickpose 4: (ref)

So with that as the reference point for what I have, what do I need to work on/add in here. I have an abstracty oil painting I'm thinking of putting in as well, I'll get a decent photo of that, and the other two figure drawings (those are form life to!) and post them soon.

If by RMCAD, you mean Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design,
I used to teach there.

I'm pretty sure the program doesn't 'cater' to figurative work.
It certainly didn't before.

One of the very best painting instructors is my friend John Lencicki.
While he does teach figure painting, it's not the sum total
of his subject matter by far.

The only thing that the submission of lots of nekkid wimmin really
tells me is, you're young and full of homones. Not that there's
anything wrong with the work, but you don't HAVE to do just
figurative.

Your palette is very mature. The building entrance in the
reflection in the mirror piece is very rich in texture and
color interest.

What strikes me most about your work is the passion you
show for finding drama and design in mundane things like
the subway piece.

There are stronger more interesting points in your work than
just how good of an anatomy technician you are. You'll
learn that.

I don't think you'll have any problems...at least not at RMCAD.

Ten: I know what you mean, I am pretty comfortable working from life, but have had somewhat limited access to models and such via underwhelming classes. Several of the pieces in here were reffed off domai things and I think I'm just going to drop them and not finish up with them, largely because it's not a challenge to do so anymore, I had been working from photography extensively in the past as I didn't have the opportunity to work from live models and I was at a level where working from photos helped. Now it's more of a crutch and I'm trying to work myself away from that a lot. In regards to life drawing, I'm posting two of the ones from my spring 04 semester that I plan on using in my application protfolio and kicking myself for leaving so many of my life drawings in Canada when I moved. I'm aware that I don't have to apply in person, the trips are primarily for me to check out the schools in person and see the facilities and make sure the programs are worth my time and buttload of money. I just spent a lot on a school up in Canada and I feel like the program was totally not worth it. Art Center and RMCAD are both _way_ more than that was and my parents and I are both wanting to be more cautious this time around.

Stacy: I do indeed mean the Rocky Mountain COllege of Art & Design, and wow, I didn't expect to get feedback from former faculty there in this. I should have looked further into RMCAD as well, I was told by an Art Center graduate that when applying for their Illustration program I should have a portfolio with a lot of figure work and just lumped RMCAD in with that.

The work you linked is really impressive. I'm glad to see the faculty at both schools really knows their stuff. I was a little worried about that from prior post secondary experience.

I'm dropping a lot of this stuff out of my portfolio actually due to a lot of the feedback I've been getting. The small thumbs are definately out, and the overtly refferenced domai speedpaintings.

Thank you for the encouragement and feedback, it is quite reassuring and the points about my pallette and finding drama and design in mundane things have never really been mentioned to me before. It kind of makes me want to concious persue that type of thing more.

The two life drawings I have allready but just got pictures of.

Figure Study: Acrylic underpainting with a wash and oil pastels over, from life, don't remember how long

Arabian Knight: guy came in in costume, all oil's long pose.

Saturday morning this week and next I'm dropping by a local life drawing session to get more stuff and updated work, I'll be drawing there specifically with my portfolio in mind.

Congrats. When applying to schools like these, are a traditional medium like oils a must, or will good digital/ pencil-charcoal suffice?
