too bad i cannot understand everything probably due to language problems, but i think he dropped some deep wisdom pearls here and there.

by the way: does anyone in this forum know the book "the artist's way" by julia cameron? it's about the spiritual side of being an artists, how to "activate creativity" and those things, mostly about getting rid of blockades. very good book, interesting to read. but dangerous, too. imho.

i think it's dangerous, because julia cameron kinda neglects, that getting (and being) an artist often, if not most of the time has to do with hard work and getting your ass up to begin. and that it often feels like a marathon. imho.
but she talks about it like being artist is about surfing on a wave of love, like a feeling of total harmony to yourself, to your sourroundings etc.

what she describes isn't wrong, but it's only the one, the smaller side doing art has to do with...she mainly ignores the work, the technique-factor. work like all other people beneath artists have to do. this "get up ya ass and start"-thing. that starting your pic is often just like go and wash the dishes.

she over-describes the inspiration/love/help-of-god-thing, which can be imho not more that the dot of the "i", and therefore i think it is dangerous to fully trust her words and hope to be able to produce good work by hoping to find the ultimate inspiration.

call me a fool, but i kinda tried it this way years ago, when i nearly didn't know anything about how to get an artist, about the online-communitys and all that. i thought talent is more or less everything you have to possess, and then the cat will land on its feet after "just practising" over a time...

let's say i was on blehblehbleh's mental state.

but on whole and having this in mind, the book can really help to evoke this i-dot- thing better...

Yeah, inspiration is nice but sooner or later it will change to pure perspiration. That artsy mentality might help if you want to do fine art, but I agree it's bit dangerous to think like that in illustration or commercial art. The changes you will be forced to do by an AD can still provoke some waves of bittersweet love inside you though

Thanks for posting that link, I think it�s very interesting and alot of truth is in it.

As to the inspiration thing, I actually only did any meaningful work when I have had inspiration from somewhere that was quite strong.

Also you can�t really compare working for someone else or working for yourself. I see with my latest jobs that you foremost have to do stuff that the customer wants, not what you think is best, simply because people think that what they want is what they need and what is best. They hire artists to make up for what they lack in technical skill, but most don�t want anyone doubting them and telling them whats best, even if you are right.

Thats the reason I really want to become someone living off MY art some day. Because I don�t want to be anyones fool or put up with things like "I want this and that even though it�s big bullshit, but you�ll make it this way because I pay you and I�m always right".

The most important point is the last one I think. Ultimately because it is about being a good person and having ideals and principles. Sure we probably all have to do things we don�t like or feel ok with, but I hope I never get to a point where I actually believe those things aren�t even bad.

But then I�m someone that tries to get through the wall with his head until he cracks his skull and dies...or the wall crumbles down.
