Ok, it's a low budget(250,000 bucks) gore slasher movie starring Ron Jeremy as a cop and Donald Sutherland as an insane preacher. The director guy claims that this will be the sickest and the meanest movie ever made. I have meetings with the director and the DP Mondays and Fridays.
And my pay is $500 for the whole project. Some say it's a reasonable rate for a low budget movie. But I really wonder how much a storyboard artist get paid per a 'regular-budget' movie. I can see that storyboard artists have to work closely with the director and the DP at the pre-production stage. But how much is the justifiable pay for regular Hollywood movies?
I'd be happy to work for 10 movies a year! _________________ Human mind is the battlefield of good and evil. |

If it's a Ron Jeremy flick, be glad you're getting $500!
Ron is notorious for acting in Low Budget flicks as he tries to be more of a "mainstream" actor.
Unless you have a resume as long as your arm, take the gig and don't worry about how much you might have been able to ask for. If you don't want it, there are plenty of others who do!
Justifyable pay is justified by your experience, and your references.
After you do 3-4 of these, then start comparing your wages to others. It's only AFTER you get the experience that you can start thinking about asking for more... _________________ Life is short. Expect nothing, enjoy everything.

Sutherland's getting desperate.
If HE's stooped to working with a porno star
there's not much hope of you getting what
you're worth out of this dog.
If you need the scratch, take it.
All two-bit philosophy about, take what
you get and like it, aside, artists who
did general work like gray-washing and
distressing new construction to age it,
painting murals on saloon walls and
old fashioned signage on railroad cars
for 'Breakheart Pass' with Charles
Bronson got $21 an hour (Real good
hourly in 1976) and our studio got $1500
split 4 ways to do the backdrops for the
San Antonio concert scene in 'Roadie'
that took a couple of days, on and off.
Never done storyboards though. |

the storyboard rate is $500.00/day and in that day, 11-15 b/w panels are suppose to be produced.
I've done a few music videos for Big Label but no name artists at this rate and they didn't blink. I "started" at this rate.
So, what exactly is the $500.00 for? A couple of panels or the whole movie??
Your rate and time should be based on how much you can realistically pump out in a day's block of time and how many panels they want. The last thing you wanna do is be up drawing at 2:00am saying, "Fuck...I should be getting paid more for this shit!" |

I did a sequence for a movie with a 3 million dollar budget movie and the dude paid me next to nothing. but i got some great connections and some really solid boards. If you're starting out, take the job. money is money and it is a good way to get experience. But be advised that storyboarding the whole movie is a huge commitment and for that price the people will definetly take advantage of you amd make you do more work than you have to. If you can get a contract where they give you extra for any panels they make you re-do that would be ideal. |

It's been said, but I'd like to summarize...
If you are going to work on the cheap ($500/movie definitely qualifies) make sure you are building good contacts and/or a strong portfolio with the experience. If you are so rushed that you are not producing decent pieces and there do not seem to be any decent networking opportunities you should rethink your strategy.
Good luck! _________________ HEY YOU! We're looking for a few good pixel artists |

well, my take on it is this - no job is worth taking for that little money. Did you say $500 for the entire movie? You won't even pay the gas for the meetings out of that....not worth the time. You could spend the whole time on your portfolio and get a real job. |

Ok I just stumbled on this after reading the storyboard job so far thread. I'm surprised sensors didn't go up at all the clues laid out. Donald Sutherland in a Ron Jeremy film? That alone I don't believe. A low 250k budget. If these guys could afford Donald Sutherland I think you'd be getting paid significantly more and not meeting in a diner. I just find it really hard to believe considering the man's long film career and the fact that Keifer is making good money nowadays. What other than blackmail would make a old a list actor do a film with a old fat porn star? _________________ |
