Wild Sphere is seeking to add another highly-talented, mecha designer to its art staff. The original flagship product is a roleplaying game, but the company is also producing a webcomic (based on the companys own original novellas) that will serve as the basis for a graphic novel. The setting is a Space Western with hard sci-fi elements set in an alternate future, something of a combination of "Mobile Suit Gundam" and "Cowboy Bebop".
The company is seeking candidates who can produce "Gasaraki" type humanoid mecha, and realistic (not stylized) combat equipment (e.g., tanks, helicopters, fighters, cars, guns, etc.) in traditional 2D pencil and ink drawings. We are NOT looking for 3D computer models. Engineering and architecture backgrounds (particularly mechanical or aero/astro engineering) preferred.
The mecha should have an aggressive, gritty, sturdy, realistic, "cool" look that reflects real-world engineering and physics principles and real-world combat requirements, as if they could roll off the assembly lines of today. They should look somewhat more stylized that "Battletech" type mecha; a little more realistic than "Patlabor", Armored Core, and "Macross" type mecha; somewhat more realistic than "Gundam" type mecha; and NOT like "Evangelion" type mecha.
The hallmarks we hope to establish are cool settings and characters, eye-popping artwork, intelligent writing, wry humor, and biting social/political commentary. The products are aimed towards a mature (18-45), intelligent, sophisticated audience. The artwork is PG-13 (no fan service).
This is a small, but growing and focused company, and we are willing to take all necessary time to find the right people. Were looking for people whose head and heart are in the right place, as opposed to individuals who would look at this as another job. Weve had a lot of success with candidates who are current university-level students (though not necessarily Art majors).
These are offers for freelance Work-For-Hire. However, it is paid, the pay is Fair Market Value (based on experience and work rendered), and, depending on the quality and timeliness of work rendered, successful candidates may be able to expect regular Work-For-Hire.
Strong preference for those within driving distance of the Westside of Los Angeles. Strong preference for those with at least a working knowledge of anime/manga.
Please submit a cover letter and a detailed summary of experience, references, knowledge of anime (including favorite animes/manga), salary history, salary requirements, and either a link to an online portfolio (preferred) or attach sample art (not preferred).
Please email all replies to [email protected] and include Mecha Designer in the subject line.
