*sigh* This is so typical. Anybody got any spray because this program got mad bugs in it, and its to early look for a patch

The first 10 minutes of me working with the program I experienced a crash that wiped out my custom pallette setup so I had to set up my custom pallete all over again just for it to crash 10 min later.

The Snap curve on path option isnt fluid as well everytime when was applying some pressure on the path the think and thin line pressure effect was sporadic at best. It wasnt smooth at all.

Other than that I can see the potential in the program for my particular use
The brush speed is nice and the canvas flip option is definantly a good thing to have.

HAs anybody experienced any issues??

Hi,

Are you talking about Custom Palettes, or your Palette Layout?

Once you have your palettes arranged the way you want, go to Window > Arrange Palettes > Save Layout and give it an appropriate name.

If you're talking about Custom Palettes, you can Export them as text files. Go to Window > Custom Palettes > Organizer. Highlight the name of your Custom Palette and click the Export button to save it as a text file.

If you do that as soon as your Palette Layouts and Custom Palettes are set up, there's less chance of your losing them if Painter IX vanishes/crashes before you get a chance to close the program.

I'm sorry to say that I've been reading reports from other Painter IX users about crashes or Painter IX just vanishing.

I don't know if anyone's figured out the magic formula to prevent that, but some of the things we did to keep Painter 6, 7, and 8 running smoothly should help. Take a look at this thread at CGTalk's Painter Forum:

Keeping Painter 6, Painter 7, and Painter 8 Running Smoothly:
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=121596

In Painter IX we should not need to delete the Pre-built Brush File since it now has a maximum file size limit of 200 MB. In Painter 6, 7, and 8, the Pre-built Brush File had to be deleted frequently as it had no file size limit and when it got too large, it affected Painter's performance.

Also, in Painter IX we have the new File > Iterative Save command. To use it, first use File > Save As to save the file the first time. Then, after making changes to the image, use File > Iterative Save and Painter IX will add a number at the end of the file name each time you use File > Iterative Save. It'll look like this:

waterfall.rif
waterfall_001.rif
waterfall_002.rif
waterfall_003.rif

The first file, "waterfall.rif" is the one saved using File > Save As and the rest are the ones saved using File > Iterative Save.

Another thing you'll need to know is that all custom files and user settings are saved in your User folders, not in the Painter IX application folders.

If you figure out why Painter IX crashes, please let us know.

Good luck! Smile

Hey Jin

Thanks fof the advice. It was my custom palette config that was getting blown away even after I saved it. Im going to export my palette like you said. One thing Jin ?? did any one complain about the issue with using the path on curves command cause as I said before it doesnt trace the path curve with any fluidity its a little fussy at time.

I'm trying to understand how your Custom Palette got lost even though you "saved" it (Exported it). If you did that, it should be wherever you Exported it and you should be able to Import it again.

Palette Layouts get Saved (Window > Arrange Palettes > Save Layout)..

Custom Palettes can be Exported as text files (Window > Custom Palettes > Organizer > Export).

I haven't read any complaints about the Align to Path feature, but personally, I agree it's a bit finicky. I'm finding that I need to adjust Brush Tracking and when I paint on the Shape, I need relax and not try too hard to make the brushstroke follow the Shape.

We can set Tolerance anywhere up to 999 pixels in Edit > Preferences > Shapes so I believe if we're within that distance from the Shape, the brushstroke will "Snap to Path".

With Tolerance set to 200, I'm able to make a nice free stroke with varying pressure using the Pen's Scratchboard Tool and get a lovely thick and thin line with tapering ends. I do keep my hand on the Ctrl/Command+Z keys though, because it doesn't always look so great on the first try.

Guess it just takes a little practice.

Thanks again for the advice. When i was saving my interface thru Window > Arrange Palettes> Save Layout last night along with my custom palette setup everything was cool until Painter crashed on me. It blew away only my custom palette setup and my brush control palette. Today im not having that issue and Im going to up my Tolerance I had it on the default which is 20 but im going to go with 200 and try it out.

Thanks

Unless the Painter.set file (Windows) or Painter Setings (Mac) file got corrupted, your (Saved) Palette Layout should not have been lost.

If your Custom Palettes are Exported right away after they're created, they too should not be lost if Painter crashes. They can simply be Imported again. If they're just not open on the screen, go to Window > Custom Palettes and you should see a list of your Custom Palettes. Click one of them and it'll open on your screen.

Brush Controls in Painter IX are a series of individual palettes docked together if you open them using Window > Brush Controls > General, or not docked if you open the other ones individually.

Those should never be lost since they're part of the installed Painter software, even if Painter crashes.

If you mean the Property Bar (equivalent to Controls palette in Painter 7 and earlier versions), again that's part of the installed Painter software and, like the Brush Controls palettes, should never be lost even if Painter crashes.
