Painting from ref is a double curse, you already seen the beauty yet can't get it down on paper. And this picture ended up looking quite boring.

back from a long haitus, been doing lotsa stuff since i got my tablet, this one just minutes ago.... trying out something more rough
no ref, i know i should use something, especially for lighting, but, another time...
and dammit, im still having problems with a too bland and light palette... nice one up there ax-hv
edit: omg going back two pages makes me feel like deleting this post.... i feel like i havent improved at all in the past year
are there any pages or books or tutorials that touch on how the hell you do that fancy pansy blending mode glowy stuff? is it via layer or brush? in PS that is... _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

scumworks: the sky may be boring but the atmosphere is nice, it looks to me like a cold day, with a little fog from early morning.. _________________ "I'm not a shrimp, I'm a KING PRAWN !" -- Pepe.

u guys are not gonna like this....
I had a real interesting conversation with one of my teachers today about art and where I want to go and what I have achieved so far.
This teacher asked me before the conversation to pick some digital artworks with me so he could see them for himself and what I have been upto on me sparetime, he was totally overwhelmed with the artworks and wondered why I haven't been doing the same with my traditional art.
I said -" Well, I don't know really why I can't make my oils look the same, haven't thought about that".
Thing is ,and we talked about a lot of interesting stuff, is that I really have to make choice if I wanna learn this oil thing. My digital works is holding me back I believe and if I don't make this decision know I am gonna lose for sure and u know me by now, I am a risktaker, and a risk is every choice we make but this seems more appropriate and more closer to where I am going.
So, my digital quest is over for now but not my painting quest. I will still be around and probably post a lot of traditional stuff instead if you guys are ok with it, otherwise let me know.
watmough, hmm what happened with the wc exchange? u must really think I suck. well, don't worry about it now though, just wondered why.
odds, I see you are going for that one month away from the computer. I can't promise u will get better just because staying away from the computer, I had lots of other reasons aswell to stay away from the computer. The most important thing if you wanna keep improving all the time is to be really harsch to yourself, pick one part in every painting that u like and pick 5 parts that u don't really like and remember the worst parts for your next painting. Well, that's how I work and it can't probably be good for everyone.
yeez I really need to stop rambling my inner thoughts, hope u guys will not hate me because of my choice above.
keep up everyone. |

axhv, xia, mitsui, beat, great!
Unfortunately these mud banks didn't turn out to be as spectacularly impressive as the ones i saw this morning from the bus! They are hulking great flanks of wet mud etched with little grooves and wiggles, but that's hard for me to paint :)
Another murder mystery for your investigative hottie, spooge :P

Ax HV: nice values.
Matthew: Your works have been getting interesting. I'm curious though, why can't you do both mediums? I mean, digital is digital, why make it look like anything else? you can treat oils as a whole other medium unique to expressing yourself. anyway, have fun.
bleh, the top half of the image is useless compositionally, cropping it off would help. But i'll leave it as a reminder of what NOT to do. crits welcome.
