Hi Steven!

You're work is well received here as always, and the tutorial is much appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to put it together and get it posted. Kudos!

You should jump onboard for the next d'artiste book. Your painting method is different enough from the rest of us that I'm sure it'll be a nice addition to the d'artiste series.

You know what's cool? After concentrating on photography for the last couple months and really learning the use of professional lighting system, I actually learned more about colors and light qualities than I did from painting alone. I've always shot references when I needed, but back then, the references I shot were just for the poses and clothing folds. Now, with a complete lighting system, I'm able to shoot much more complex references that includes lighting as well. I've even thought about doing some photography that's equivalent of the kind of sci-fi/fantasy paintings we love. Almost like movie still frames. Except building the props and making the costumes would be too time consuming. Maybe do them in 3D and make it a blend of photography/CG?

Thanks for sharing, this is a very nice tutorial.

I've been doing stuff in a bit similar way lately, starting from grayscale and thinking about color later. Really cool to see a pro like you using the same approach, because to me it's just too damn difficult to nail the drawing, values and color at the same time. Your results prove that whatever method gets the job done is okay.

Awesome work!

Thanks for the window in, Stahlberg. I tried this method before and failed, but now I think I finally know why. Going to try it again as soon as I get home to the tablet. Great work & much appreciated sharing!

Thanks!
update, just added a couple sentences (to better explain when I stop 'colorization' and start applying opaque paint.)
