Matthew, fred, misc, tomur, thanks! It is fun when some thing really quick works. Makes you spoiled for when you have to work at it.
Combustion, drawing before values, but one is similar to the other.
Sketch from life, refined from memory. Looks clumsy to me. Bad use of oil paint, or limited at least

Combustion, ax--hv, Tomur, octavian, many thanks there guys I really appreciate it.
ax--hv, wuw me likes your latest.
balistic, looks cool.
Combustion, be also careful with the eyes, spooge gave me a tip early on that it is better only to do the eye-sockets in the beginning, this way u learn about the eye-shadows and such and don't have to spend ages on the eyes which probably takes up the most of the time. Even the old Masters taught their apprentice to paint the eyes in the end of their learning process due to the complicated ways of the eyes.
Spooge, looks really good to me but maybe the left top corner takes away some of the attention, that dark area, could be better with more sky there, just a thought.
quick wake-up scribble, snif still sleepy.

Not much to say really... hat on the desk next to me, screwed up perspective. Still doing at least one a day, even if most right before bed.

Haven't had much time to paint digitally lately, sorry guys. I love how this thread is evolving. By the way, good to have you back Matthew; a bit late, no?
Spam to post. Colour study from ref gone down the drain, ending with me doodling mindlessly in hopes of getting someplace.

All the tree scenes lately have been awesome. Very inspiring.
from reference, about an hour.
working from a limited pallete is something I need to do more often - and I need to use the color picker considerably less. |

haha funny Hawkswift, i made one too!
matthew, i aint giving anymore tips now that i saw your more final image, damn
spoogie-woogie-kjootie-pie!. stop saying that to yourself, it makes us feel so bad. I might be too much of a noob to se what's clumsy about that painting, but i know what eyecandy is and that was the marzipan roze on the cake man! some people know how to paint real, but you know how to paint real and make it look better than reality!
Misc and ax--hv, i se real good improvements in your perspective object drawings/paintings! keep it up!!
i found a couple of pics of some model posing by a window, maybe i shouldnt work with stuff like this before i have learned to draw human bodies but it was fun anyway
photoref, 15 mins :/

Thanks for the encouragement on the oil slick. I think that I need more variety of shapes and brush use with it. It is a little, uh, deapan, if you get what I mean. It looks like it was painted with the same brush, same stroke, same edge, same through out. And the shapes are a little wonky, cause, well, I just can't seem to get them where I want them with oil. I am working on it, and sometime you solve one problem and it helps you with another that you didn't think was connected. It's a Chinese puzzle. If it's hard to do, you are doing it or thinking about it wrong.
Eyewoo, I like your finished PS paintings, I know what you are after. I have three goodies for you and anyone interested three close-ups of a bouguereau that I found in the Museum at Notre Dame. You can see the beautifully designed shapes and edges and the care and sensitivity that he had. Check out the edge on the lit side of the middle finger, wonderful quality, and so cool and neutral. get them now, I am going to pull them soon.
I have a thought, and I have no business saying it, and you can feel free to tell me to bug off, but maybe reconsider your process of tracing the initial outlines of your paintings. I never thought it was bad before, and my objection now has nothing to do with notions of cheating or anything like that. I think that the end result will be better if you do this and spend the time and care that it takes. I always thought if you trace it, it is accurate, can't improve on that! But you can. I am finding that drawing well has a lot more caricature and suppression and exaggeration than I ever suspected even with the most realistic style. I think that when you can draw really, really well, like about a thousand times better than where I am at, then you might be able to trace successfully. Rockwell and Drew Struzan are at that point. When you take a subject, internalize the forms, think about it, discard, exaggerate, and re-express them in your own way, the result is better, cleaner, more interesting, and less mechanical. And over time, working this way will make you a better artist with more control, because you have refined your thinking and perception.
I know I am not expressing this well, it has taken me so many years to even learn what I don't know about drawing, so trying to say it is really tough. Please don't think this is some mystical blather about the soul of the pose. It is very concrete.
Ok, I have stuck out my neck too far. Greatly sorry if this offends.
