The main problem seems to be your reference.
Passport photos are never that good.So therefore a lot of detail is missing.
Try to get your girlfriend to re-pose for you that way you can 'flesh her out' a bit more

There seems to be a moire(sp?) pattern on there - that might be the paper stock I suppose.
Try to add more detail in the hair and clothes - unless the strong solid black was intentional.

Hope this helps

(see you got a reply)

Let me start by saying that I think the portrait is really good. I love the feel of the drawing, and especially the look in the eyes. But I suppose you are looking from a little bit of both of the C's in C&C, so a few things that bothered me as I stared a little longer: the hidden nostril seems like it should be more visible; the lips, especially the bottom lip, lack real dimensionality -- it feels almost as if they've been textured on -- try making them come out a little more; for some reason the area beneath the nose and above the lips seems shaded odd. But these are things I nitpicked out when I stared for a while. I think its pretty cool.

i think it is your ref. aswell, i think you should grab your friend (maybe pay her) and sit down for maybe 4h's and work from life. The results, shadows and lights will be alot clearer since in the piece there are very few highlights if any...keep it up though na dpost some more Very Happy
