Matthew, I think it would have been polite to give a little credit on that racer pic.

Chapterx, thanks! I have been working on a variety of media in getting print rez versions of some sketches. The issues are really complex, and I have had the most luck with acrylic. I am too impatient to work well with oil. I can't control the edges or shapes or values the way I want. With acrylic I can. I think it is mileage, as I used to paint in acrylic for jobs, so the mileage ratio is 100 to 1 between acrylic and oils. I want those deep rich saturated colors with oil and I will bleed to get them. Probably the best bet is to paint in acrylics and scumble with oils later. The nicest, most fun thing is to combine WC, then gouache, then pastel with a little colored pencil. If you keep awake, you can make some nice work this way.

Heres a disaster in progress, all oil. I have given up mostly. I will glaze over it to unify some things maybe, but it is half done and I can't get the drawing correct. Story of my life.

I don't know but I bet the final potter poster had the three characters with a lensflare and a blue overlay. The bigger the franchise, the more conservative it must be. Only makes sense.

Thanks for the compliments on potter! Gecko, I was going to try to keep as much "art" in the final as I could have. This is something that Struzan did so well.

Craig: "Heres a disaster in progress, all oil. I have given up mostly. I will glaze over it to unify some things maybe, but it is half done and I can't get the drawing correct. Story of my life."

-- I'll give you 100$ for it (honest offer). Although it's worth a lot more imho. It has a great play of values, and I'm very fond of the hue gradience across the piece. It's a great piece of art, whether you are content with it or not. Inspirational, and I'd like one of your pieces for old times sakes.

Matthew: Wow, I love this last one. I cannot exactly tell what it shows, aside from the character (maybe this is intentional) - but the overall look is great. It's very unusual - especially here in the speedpainting thread. I hope to see more of that - keep it coming Smile

Craig: I am not sure if I understood correctly - do you try to say that this picture does not have highly saturated colors, because you used oil? Since there is no direct comparision with an acrylic picture, I cannot know if it would be even better - but so far I wouldn't agree: the reds are very intense IMO.
(what are these smaller pics there?)

spooge, what is it exactly about oils that kills you?
is it the inability to really rework areas that havent been planned out enough?
well,i guess that cant be it cause you use watercolor....
u can get hard edges if u use the oil pretty thin on paper.the oil paint soaks in and doesnt move around...
but it looks like youre using it on paper there....
i dont know,i have similar problems with oils, and i guess i cant figure out why i have a problem with them either.
i have a tendency to get my self in artistic messes and i have to fight my way out .with acrylic, its easy, you just cover the shit up.
with watercolor,u just switch to a different medium, pastels, for example.
oils seem to me to have to be well planned(like parrish),or ,handled like a drawing, and done really confidently(like manet or sargent) whatever......
i guess i'm just askin' cause i have a problem, too, and maybe your thoughts can help clear up mine....

I wanted to add a big nasty mushroom cloud but it's two in the goddamn morning.

Had to use some ref on the palm trees cuz I'm a bumpkin.

R Fredrickson: I like your underwater piece a lot. The slanty orange forest is nice too.

post to blab:

Kind of a milestone piece for me in terms of technique development, but it's got some perspectivey issues here and there.

Obligatory asskissery: Look at this place. Some seriously good things goin on in here.
>tedsuo (from a couple pages back): yeah, I'm in the city. You going to school here, working, ...?
>Capt.Flush : ducking Holy crap!
>Spooge : Thanks for the WIP shots. Seeing that kinda stuff with the scale information that a photo brings is really... um.... sick
>watmough : Really dug a couple of those. You're going in some cool directions.
>matthew : that purple and orange pic was bitchin.
>misc: Hope you don't mind this. I took your car sketch and spent far too long noodling it, taking out the day's frustrations in a sketch.

I't s got its own issues. It would be the smelly dead fish in the corner of the car class. How do you get a good clean save for the web without making an obese file? Too many settings to remember.

Spooge, u are right I apologize, was only inspired by that composition in yours hence why I didn't credit it, sorry about that. I will not post it anywhere else and not on me site. I don't add pics on me site nowadays just post here and on occasion in CA.

Thomas Veil, hey many thanks for your comment, yea it is a little bit different. I like to treat things differently from time to time, thanks again.

ryanpaul, many thanks there.

ok as I said earlier, hidemode for me so I will not get back and comment this picture, so, thanks in advance if you comment this one.

God playing with his hand and whom is the other? hmm

Ryanpaul: I'm currently working on not one but two animated shorts. Trying to cram in as much as possible before the next freelance gig... unfortunately it doesn't leave much time for painting Smile

Dark Lord: I really dig that second sketch!

Craig, thank you again for sharing the (oil_slick.jpg) . . . wonderful painting ! How much time did you spend on that one? Shocked

I picked up "Acrylic Landscape Painting - by Hugh Greer " a while ago. It is a good book, with some step by step tutorials . . and after reading that particular book, I did try couple of 11x14 landscape paintings, to practice/learn, and get use to the media . . the best part is that it dries so quickly. Thx for your tips, I will try some acrylic-paint next weekend and post it in here. What kind of board do you recommend to paint on . . ? Well hopefully you'll post a scan, or a larger version of that painting someday. . . . As far as oil paint goes. . after watching Syd Dutton paint, and seeing some of the original matte paintings of Al Whitlock, and Stromberg, I was speechless, and started painting in oils in all my free time, and sometimes even on my lunch breaks. I was amazed how they still had those vibrant colors in there work, especially in various sci-fi related paintings. Like you mentioned the colored pencils tip on top of WC/gouache/pastel, I've also seen it in those matte paintings on glass (taking a close look/studying the work). . they actually went on top of the dry surface (also keeping in mind that these are on glass/boards flat clean surface), and then painted in some highlights, trees etc. using colored pencils. Syd was kind enough to share and teach me painting landscapes/skies in oils, and some shortcuts.

I certainly consider you a modern master, and I am looking forward to purchase some of your traditional/digital work as prints, or buy "The Art of Craig Mullins" in the near future. Anyways, maybe we'll chat some other time about acrylics in another section of this forum . . . don't want to take up the entire page (sorry guys)

Here is a cyborg pinup, done for fun/practice in PS.

Thanks everyone Smile

Alp

Spooge: That's a re-working of an old speedy, is it not? I know I have it in my art\mullins\ folder in any case Smile

It's really awesome but I thought some of the depth got lost in the oil version. I prefer the smoke and haze of the PS version. But then, it's not finished, is it.

Oh, and I'd buy it too. =D
