Thanks, aphelionart, beat, swarm.
Zhalimuto, there should be no problem with using a lot of turps in an oil. I am using 3 parts artists turp, 1 part CP linseed oil for the intial washes. As long as you remember fat over lean it should be fine. The problems come in where you lay down a thick layer, and come back over it later with thinned paint. Especially if you are using some type of metal dryer in large quantities. I knew a matte artist who would work in thin layers, and used gesso to get whites back and then glazed over that. I saw the paintings after 10 years and they were fine. But I would not like to see them after 100-200 years.
You can see in museums where the artist has put lean over fat. It cracks like crazy. I think it is the different shrinkage rate. If the lean is over the ground (and it is stable) then things are OK.
Ralph Mayer's artist handbook is the best I have found for this kind of info.
But I am very close to permanently giving up with oil. I cannot control it, the results are very ugly to me, and I have been at it longer than I would like to ponder. Seems mixed media, WC, gouache, acrylic are for me. But I love that wonderful value range. I have to keep trying.
Here is another bar painting. I think it is the red, but I don't do the setups:)

those are nice drawings,swarm...its cool to see that from you
spooge-have u tried painting with oils on paper?its VERY different from canvas in that it absorbs into the surface and u cant move it around the same way...you know instead of sitting on top of the canvas.easier to layer a little bit cause the paint doesnt smoosh together so much, especially with turpentine.
anyway, dont give up on your oils, theyre nice.i think maybe youre just fighting it too much.

very nice beat, spooge, watmough, swarm (I like that first portrait especially swarm)
spooge... saying you are about to give up on oils while simultaneously posting such beautiful studies is depressing. The lighting in that last one really glows around the hips, ribcage and thighs.
by the way, I tried painting with plastics a week ago. oof. perhaps I'll try oils next.
a couple quick sketches from today:

Hey all, great stuff.
Spooge- Hey I like your oils, I like your reflected blue color in the skin tone on this last one. Nice. I have that trouble with everything all the time!
Varnum - Those are nice. What are plastics? (I PM'ed you)
some things from today.

thanks, spooge, yes, u r right,
i used to paint alot of classy paintings,
lean on fat,fat on lean, applying many layers and
they all cracked after one or two years.
what i mean about using turp is that it can
be easily wiped off by fingers if u only use turp
without lineseed oil.
anyway, thank you for ur info

Llama, those look good. You are getting much better.
Wish I could say the same. I really don't like this one. It could be the composition, the careful, stodgy rendering, the poorly understood anatomy, or all of the above.

Swarm love the guy holding a beer : ) birnOut, incredibly nice studies. Llama, I like those two figures up the top especially, and Spooge, I think the deep dent in her face and the lack of unison between head and body take away from it's appeal, for me.
portrait of a friend, ten mins with cont. First time I used cont (I hadn't even known what it was ) but I like it. |

Great work all - keep it up.
Roma: I love these sketches - especially the powerful shading.
Popeye: Those face studies are great. Did you have some kinds of models for these?
Some sketchbook pages of the last days
Animals in a park
some guys playing football
The last 2 pages ar not very good - but its really hard to get something nice on the paper when the people are moving so fast. _________________ www.oxpal.com |
