spooge's advice is a big part of why I come here... and being awed by everyone's talent here is the other part.

too bad I must trash it...

Spooge, 10 minutes? You're a monster.

skullmonkeys, very cool ships!

allpetter, great lighting!

Great work y'all! Don't feel left out, I'm just too lazy to scroll down any further in the topic review. It's getting better and better and better and... Ugh. Too good.

"Sure I'm a monster, but I'm not a MONSTER about it!"
Okay, a little doom influence here and a ref there.

Real nice idea Spooge!
I'm right on it after this weekend with my girlfriend!

Here is a 10 minute sketch... to add something to the idea.
I'm gonna continue storyboarding this one... indeed!

Nice stuff everyone!

allpetter-that makes me think of close encounters for some reason..
ok.let me say that i CAN NOT paint out of my head....i really only work from life and even then not that great...so ive been forcing myself to do one of these speedpaintiings every day with NO reference whatsoever and its kicking my ass!
this is almost pants-down-in-public embarrasing for me to post this so here goes....

watmough you think? cool... Razz Thanks!

Seth1: Work with alot of layers.
Play around with layer settings.
Set them to color dodge and/or brighten...
adjust saturation/contrast in layers.
Don't be afraid to put even the most extreme color in your works...

I dump alot of different colors on me canvas before starting to paint!

You learn to use color in a better way the more you dare experimenting with it imho.

I've been getting a few pm's asking me what I do to achieve surten things.
I've been writing quite alot...

Since, what I've been writing is rather personal towards the one requesting it, it would be hard to cut and paste the info here.

But I promised myself to put together some sort of "How I work" later this year.

DaNG! I'm still a noob, and I'm learning to much atm to really be of any help. As soon as I might have settled with techniques, and if I ever will become anything half baked, I promise I'll contribute with ALOT!

I must draw a WHOLE lot more to learn form and structure better...
and to get slightly more patient...

Railk >> I adore your picture. Will you please, please tell me how you did it, or rather what was your medium? You did it on paper I guess but with what? Watercolours and ink? I'd so like to try that myself.

Sorry, no pic.

this thread is a huge inspiration. I need to do this more. Much to learn from everyone about light and form, design and space and storytelling and then some. great work all. and now to avoid the things I need to work on most. :)

Zhuzhu, glad you think that helps you. It's OK advice for being free on the internet:)

Mon, varnum, have you guys seen Steve Huston's work? He was a teacher of mine at school. He was a bodybuilder then, and I remember this huge arm gliding by my ear as I was struggling with a drawing and he would say "do it this way..." And you listened... I have always been fascinated by the idea of using physical threats to increase the rate and retention of instruction. Maybe some electrodes where the sun occasionally shines? Miss that ribcage and zzaaapp. You won't do it again.

But I remember Steve's work as totally competent but a little stiff. He has kept the competence but is no longer stiff, it is really amazing work. Check it out. I wish there were some larger jpgs available.

Now, to bury this at the bottom of this page so I won't offend anybody, my concept illustration for a new reality TV show, set on a pirate ship. Since the playground was closed last night I just worked on this a little more. I should not have, I got bored and it lost some freshness here and there. Ref on the head.
