ddawghurl, hey there ddawghurl, I have seen you post here now for a while and u kind of remind me of me when I first started to post here. I believe I was in all the threads and started a new thread every once in a while, time goes by fast I feel and now I am old as time itself.
Anyway, I saw in one thread and maybe it was the speedy where u asked how to make a background and or a forest. I think there is an old saying that one cannot see the forest because of all the trees and in painting it is more or less like that, it is more about the atmosphere and what one can leave out.
It can be difficult to give a noobie advice and say what u should focus on but it seems that u are willing to learn and keep going with it so that is the most important ingredience, to keep going and experiment with different things.
Anatomy is important if you are gonna do many characters, this is the part in painting and drawing where I have have had the most problems so far. To know how a certain part of the body moves and what kind of muscles that react when the body moves. I still have problems with this but it is fun and good to know about it.
Then of course comes other important areas some of them I believe is more important than anatomy and other things but this is often disputed about. For eg, Composition, balance etc.
Practise on poses often, try to draw some with lines and some with simplified shapes, this is good practise I promise and try to remember some poses u see in movies.
All in all it is difficult to say what u should focus and that is more up to you aswell but u will pick up things here and there if you keep browsing this forum.
I made a quick overpaint for you and I tried to keep it simple, see, you don't see any trees but hopefully u get the feeling that it is a forest.
Not really a good overpaint but I hope u can pick up some things from it.
And yea btw while I am at it, a hero like that wouldn't probably need a sword if he had a big gun. This is also one of those parts u need to think over cause if he holds both a gun and a sword it makes the picture un-balanced, hehe maybe he will become confused and shoot himself in the foot. And yea hehe maybe mine is worser.
have a nice day ddawghurl and keep it up.

I can't speak for him , but I know Photoshop and Painter are the most common programs used. Artrage is also used by people who can't afford the others, or want to work with realistic oils.
I personally use artrage...becuase I don't have photoshop, painter, or a tablet |

I just wanted to say how cool it is that Matthew, who started out here as a total newcomer to art, is now giving solid advice to the current crop of newbies. It's like the circle of life. I promised myself I wouldn't do this but . . . *snif*
Seriously though, this is why Sijun is still the best digital painting board on the planet. I love you guys.

I'd like to add ...
weaselball2:
I think Artrage isn't a good program to practice with.
Maybe I just haven't found the tools and it is possible somehow ...
(I played with it for maybe an hour)
But I have found no color-picking tool ...
the way the colors blend is weird ...
it takes forever to change the brush size ... (edit: nm, just found the fast way to change the brush-size)
there are limits for the canvas size ...
no straight-line tool afaik, no layers ... and so on.
Is it possible to zoom at all?
It has some nice features that make it a nice toy ...
for professionals who need a challenge maybe.
But I'd use Gimp or OpenCanvas instead.
Artrage is more fancy but fancy isn't better for people who are learning. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

hehe matth... your "overpaintings" are stand-alone-artworks, not overpaintings.. you changed the pose, the colors, the figure, the cloth and the enviromnet _________________ *

I've been lurking here for a good two years but even I have seen Matthew go from really basic art, to incredable stuff. I now look for his posts instead of skippin em Sijun is amazing. |
