Spooge, do you think the simplifying works better in this one? no tricks in this one, only straight painting. Smile

I am having a real hard time with making it work and to keep it simple at the same time, hmm only one billion more speedys to do. Smile

sleeping time right about now.

Odd: holy crap that's strange. I was onto something just like that top one a while back.... I was working on it a long time ago but never finished because my style sucks so bad.

Mathew, DUde, I LOVE that skull. The right combination of values and edges. nice one brotha!!!!

anyway, I just got back from my LA trip... WEnt to the lacma because some of my favorite artists works are there. I have never seen a Sargent in real life and I know that many of you have not either. SO for those interested, here are a few pics. I have a few detail shots I can upload if anyone is interested in technique.

De La Tour

i'm glad some people enjoyed the sketches a few pages back. thanks for the comments and sorry for not replying to everyone.
Vyle > wow, awesome ! it was a pleasure to hang around with you in texas! thanks bro !
Gontaro > thanks man ! where do you hide all your works btw ? i think there used to be more pictures on your webpage.
kenchan > that scooter pic is really cool.
spooge > don't know where it might go, but i'm sure it will be good. for some reason, that last painting reminds me of your excalibur-like pic with the knights & big red flags in the wind. my brain just see them both as very 2 dimensional and graphic.
As i'm always struggling between the urge to do graphical 2d shapes versus the need to depict reality with volumes and lighting, if you have 5mns, i would be really interested to know more about the process on that pic and why you like the result.

couple of hours in photshop. background is a photo overpaint.. i fear it's not a very interesting picture, but at least the fact of sketching on real paper with slower strokes and gestures actually helped me to be more patient with my digital stuff. tried to be more realistic than usual. leg looks awefully flat and shadows are all fucked up though. i'll spend more time refining it, if anyone can comment and crit that one (rendering/lighting aspects would help more than pure design-related crits). thanks.

octavian, thank you there and I like yours there, reminds me a bit of that clock picture flushie did way back. thanks for posting those Sargent pics.

Hardcore, I made an overpaint and nothing perfect but I think that composition disturbed that picture, especially if you want to make a finished picture out of it. I bended the perspective a bit too.
Nice picture otherwise really nice detail, I gotta work more on to add detail in my pics. I hope it is ok with the overpaint.

hmm what to paint today?

philxxx: even though it may happen only on my screen which is kind of dark, but the shadow on the left foot is a bit too strong, and in a way it is altering the foot outline. removing this shadow will probably put back the guy in a more funky perspective.
it's a pleasure observing you discover new areas, especially after the workshop. and i love that image btw mate.

This one started with the intention to dont care about details, just keeping it rough and concentrate on the colors and light. But I once again could not overcome the urge to render little details and shade certain parts. Damn...
