It has a good thing going for it so far, I can tell that you have had some fun with the concept sketch. There are a few things that I think you might want to work on.
1. Work on using Layers, If you learn them well they can be your best friend. The technical aspect behind a drawing is key. REMEMBER TO LABLE YOUR LAYERS.
2. experiment with Light and shadow to achieve a line. rather than drawing a line, look at how the line is formed through contrast of Light and shadow (this works directly with life drawing, I recommend doing a lot of them it's the best thing you can do to get better)
3. Pay close attention to Detail. don't be afraid to zoom way in and work on a few key areas that could make or break an image. but it's important to remember NOT to get too carried away with detail and "draw the life out of everything" as my father said to me once. if you look at Craig Mullin's work at www.goodbrush.com you will see that he uses very deliberate general strokes to get very important details that make his images practically knock you out of your seat. you will see what i mean if/when you look at his work. this is something that I have always tried to do but never been able to really achieve. I have been trying so hard to get this effect but it just comes with lots of practice.
4. composition, your horizon needs a bit of work. (this is where layers come in very handy. you can work on just the horizon if you want to, and put the layer on the bottom. if you need help with this i will try to help you out more. are there any other details in the desert there? tumbleweed? maybe a train robber? or a faint village in the background? buffalo perhaps. have fun with it
work on those and post it again. can't wait to see what you come up with. _________________

It's a nice start. would play arounf with the colours a bi, maybe making the sky more blue and make teh red of the wagons less intensive. The smoke looks weird too. The colour of the ground is fne as a base but some brighter yellow colour on top of it would make it better i think.
When you're happy with the colours you could define the shapes better, not necessarily adding that much more detail, and probalby using a hard brush instead.
Continue making the ground a little blurry, it helps the feeling of movment
just noticed hoe the reflections in the windos are very dark blue, which isn't very realistic, it should be brighter i think
and i don'r think you have to use layers, I only use them when I'm painting something that i'm not sure i want to keep so that I can easily remove it later |

thanks for the comment it was quite helpfull.
some background things added no robbers because I can't draw horses I tought about adding the time machine from back to the future maybe later.
I changed the smoke and steam, messed up the wheels compartment of the locomotive and added some details (should I add more?). and changed the color of the windows.
I used pianter classic so I can't use layers here.
hope i didn't forget to mention anithing.

much much better, I still don't like the cyan and bright sky and the red cars look weird with the cloudy grey things on them. I liked them better in the picture before this one. The train has a more solid feeling and the ground is definitely better |

the ground(and everything else too, train, trees whatever) towards the horizon should take on a sort of blueish hue since that is what earth's atmosphere does, that's why the sky is blue _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

These are the final train pics because i do not think I can improve it more without starting agian. The engine is to long I can't get the ground right and the smoke is starting to bother me as well.
Feel free to correct me if not showing enough perseverance.
In the picture below I changed the locomotive to a mallet (2 wheel sets), because I think it could't make turns.
Thanks for your support. _________________ 'Ik worstel en kom boven' |
