This is a sketch of Tristan & Isolde, the couple from the tragic drama, when
Isolde meets up with Tristan while he's disguised as a leper. She doesn't
really look as sad as she should, but I liked her this way and left her alone.
He shouldn't really be wearing knight-wear beneath the robes either, but I
think of it as artistic freedom to make it read better/more interesting.
Any crits are welcome.
Instead of heartless speedpaint colour practice I decided to actually put
some heart instead of mind into the work. I didn't use any ref, so it came
out kind of stylized. (Not that I mind.) I would like to put some brushwork
to it once I get better at it.
I actually like this picture.
[edit: its 7am and I can't spell.] |

Hey that's nice! This is one of my favorite subjects. There are so many differnt verisons of the story that have nothing to do with one another, other than ill fated lovers.
post a bigger one. Can't see with these postage stamp pics. But I'm lucky I not dial up.
Only crit I could have is watch the perspective on the heads a little. We are looking down on his head, if we go by relationship between the nose and mouth and jaw and neck, but we are looking in profile at the bottom of the nose and the brow-eye relationship..Or not, you can draw a lot better than I can. |

Yeah that's true.. many of them are weirdly close to the Lancelot & Guinevere story as well, and some have elements of pure fantasy involved. One book I have even mentions Tristan as a good friend of Lancelot, which makes the whole thing even weirder. However, I do love mythological couples and the likes.
I think you're on to something about the nose-mouth-jaw thing. especially the mouth. nice eye there, I'll try to fix it, thank you very much. :) Here's a larger version for all those who uses the local cinema to surf: http://idun.free.fr/tristan_isolde_high.gif |

Neff, tiger, watmough, matt : Thank you all very much for the kind words, I'm glad you liked it. :)
Summer pudding : A, thank you! I've never seen these before, but it's a little like Mucha meets Bauer, beautiful! I can tell now where a lot of modern artists have gotten influence from, I'll have to check this through more. Very nice of you to share, if you have more artists like this I'd love to browse through them as well.
theodeluxe : Haha, I don't know if we can overlook the option of education that easily, but hopefully we'll both manage even if we don't find a good place to study. Thanks for the comments on the page too! It's mostly a temp page where I put latest additions in my practice. I like how the art in your page shows an big leap in skill from old > new btw. Did you have some kind of revelation or did you just choose not to show off every step in between? :) (Maybe it was all in the upgrade to tablet/digital?)
thank you all! \o/ |

In one way, I think I had some form of revelation, I just suddenly realized how easy it all was, once you get down to it. And since then Ive been learning every day. The jump to digital, and looking at other peoples wacom work, really got me going also.
I realized one thing that changed everything. I am an artist of shapes, not of color or scenery, nor mood. But of shapes. Having that cleared up and focusing on it REALLY sped me up.
Everyone should do that. Sit down and think, what is it im good at? And:
A) focus on it, and
B) Never ignore the rest.
Everyone seems to be trying to learn everythin at the same time, madness I say... thats the end of my revelation essay, hope you enjoyed it, Im off to draw me a nasty troll!

I like it. The expressions on the face draw me into the pic first. Then the boldness of the lines that create the hands draws my eyes to it, and creates a clear message about the overall feeling of the drawing. |

I like you style, and somehow this picture inspires me to draw, witch I haven't done in a looong time. Although, my problem in drawing with computer is that I can't even draw a straight line with my Wacom. So I can't make the line go where I wanted it to go. That's why it's so much harder to draw or paint with computer than in real life.
Should I make a rolling stand under my Wacom?
What kind of methods you people use to make your pen go where you want it to? Or is it just matter of practice.
I bought my Wacom Intuos in January 2001. |

wow, I don't think I ever got this many comments for anything before.. thank you all \o/
cybear : Glad you like it, I'll try to get the real page up soon. I saw your semi-post in the speedthread, that wasnt from class was it? When are you coming to visit btw? You better hurry up or sbz might cease to be before you get there. ;D
theo : That's probably some good advice for a lot of people starting out, including me. I figure no one ever learned to juggle using 10 balls from the very start (not that it has ever kept me from trying) ... Maybe the hardest thing is knowing what would be the best to start with and where to go from there, and I figure that's the point where I'd like a good school/teacher. :)
Teeb : Thank you very much, I actually based the whole picture on the connection between the faces hoping for it to work itself out. The bold lines on the hands comes mostly from me being a coward thinking they might go lost in each others and the backgrounding wrinkles. I really try not to have dominating lineart/outlining on anything, but with all that comic art stuck in my head it's hard not to.
Petri.J : That it inspires you to draw is just the best compliment there is to me, really, thank you. I had the same trouble as you drawing digitally when I started out (and still have alot of the time), the way I draw now is with a 1px pen without any size/alpha, and then switch it with an eraser set to size. The easiest way is to sketch every line using many small strokes (instead of one long one) and then switch to eraser to erase all the unecessary linework, creating your wished line. (And then continue like that, switching between pen & eraser.)
I figure it depends a little on what kind of lineart you want to end up with, but for this kind of sketching it's the best tip I have to offer. The alternative is trying to hit the perfect line with one stroke, and hit ctrl-z until you succeed. :) Some people also put a paper over the wacom to make it less slippery (even though it wears the nib down slightly faster, but it eases the training and often helps you when you do detail work in the beginning). Another tip I found very usefull is don't drink and draw. \o/ |
