the hand looks fine but his arm is way too long.
Also i would set some aspects by using some dark hard lines to give him a clear shape
Edit : No wait, the length of the arm is ok |

hase - looking good
I'd advise focusing on what the light is really doing to the forms. if you consider the light first - a whole new dynamic emerges that governs your values and the overall gesture, no matter how loose or abstractly the tool is handled. spooge has talked about this at length and he's right on.
also, don't be afraid to work nuance into the pose. if it's too rigid the composition will suffer.

thanks for the feedback and the sketch (which is very helpful and disheartening at the same time) .
i tried doing something with more light and less detail, but im having plenty of trouble there... with basic geometric shapes its not so difficult, but I feel a bit lost without clear-cut lineart.

cool - that head looks nice
I dont see line art as being much of an issue personally. you can leave it in or take it out depending on what quality you're going for. I often find it useful to draw a picture before painting it though. it helps as foundation.
the abstract shapes lit surfaces create are the thing to get as accurate as possible.

thanks for the cool "this is how" sketches - your last one is the best so far. are you using any kind of reference for those or is it just paint&go?
heres what I came up with... still nowhere near what I think it should look like, but maybe the right direction. still getting lost in details.

no ref, which is why the proportions are off, but I kind of like that. makes it feel a bit more energetic somehow. its fun making it up but I'd prefer to use a model as ref.
your last one is getting there... I'd recommend not worrying too much about details and blending - just ask yourself: overall, where is the brightest spot? darkest? exactly what shapes do they make? try to be as precise as possible and you'll find that complex forms and details are often quite simple when reduced to thier abstract shapes as defined by light.
I found the hard part is actually seeing the simplicity. after that, drawing it is relatively easy. |

very quick one before bed... less details, still went wrong somewhere. I didnt think the light through as well as i should have.
