I've been sketching a lot this term and I thought I might post some of my work to date. A lot of these are complete drawings that I spent a good deal of time on, and I don't have a lot of quickies, which is a trend I am trying to correct. Unfortunately, the sketchbook is really large and I could not scan the complete artworks in their entirety. I fiddled around with curves a bit to correct the scanning artifacts, but it might still be brighter than I intended depending on your monitor.

I would like some advice on what I should try to improve. My Art12 teacher is well educated but ultimately incapable of providing helpful comments concerning our artwork; he's too busy showing us "cool web sites" and promoting Macs. These were almost entirely done with a 4B pencil or Staedtler pens and a black pastel crayon.

Hey

I really like the first drawing and the Indian drawing, very nice style.
To give you a tip since you wanted it would be that you could use more variation in your tones, as I can see right now is that the most of the drawings are in the same tone. For eg, you could make things darker in the front, (especially shadows), and perhaps as a atmospheric perspective you could make things in the back brighter.

Keep it up
Matthew

hi Khatru, your values arent too clear/defined. im no expert i basically just posted in order to link you to the Loomis books. if you dont know they are free, very good, and most people here i think have used them. try the chapter about tones in 'Creative Illustration' all his books are linked below.
i like the third one, it has the best contrast of values.

Thanks for the replies. I apologise for the crappy scans... the contrast of the original drawing is somewhat muffled; still, the comments about range of tones and value are true. It is one of the primary concerns I have when drawing nowadays; I am of the school of thought that if you can accurately reproduce the interplay of light and dark in an image, then the rest will follow.

I have read parts of the Loomis books before, but thanks for the new link, it's about time to brush up anyways.
